Customers love our Heated Poultry Waterer, but they don’t love fiddling with the lid when it’s really cold. (We don’t either!)So we’ve added a hinged quick-fill cap. It’s just the right size for a garden hose or watering can. With a glance you can also check the water level. Quick-fill lid fits all Heated Poultry Waterers sold since 2019.
For folks that don’t need to worry about frozen water, look to the 3-Season Poultry Waterer. It’s a reliable top-fill waterer with many of the best-in-class features found in our heated version.

Note: The exact number of birds to water is difficult to determine as there are many factors that influence intake; salt and protein levels in the diet, humidity, temperature, productivity (growth or egg production) and the birds ability to process feed and water.
How to Use
The detachable cord can be stowed separately during warmer months.
The electrical plug cap (used during summer months) fits over a nub on the bottom of the bucket.
Nipples should be placed just above the birds’ heads. The birds should stretch up slightly to drink.
A few tricks for dealing with stubborn birds:
- Remove all other sources of water. Place the new nipple waterer in the old waterer’s location.
- Bring a bird’s beak directly to the nipple waterer and flick the nipple. You may have to activate the nipple with the bird’s beak to demonstrate the new water source. (See video above.)
- Place a sunflower seed in the drip trough. When the bird pecks at the seed, it will discover the new water source.
- Use a red laser pointer to direct chickens to the nipple. Similar to house cats, our chickens will chase and follow the red light. (This was inadvertently discovered by our photo dept and is now our go-to method for getting camera-shy birds to cooperate.)
You don’t have to train every bird in the flock. Just a few will do. Once the first chickens begin drinking, others will follow.
Precautions
Warning: Risk of electrical shock—Connect only to a branch circuit protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI). Contact a qualified electrician if you cannot verify that the circuit is protected by a GFCI.
Troubleshooting
Not all of the water from the drinker will end up in the bird. Chickens are messy drinkers. Bored chickens may also peck at the nipple even when not seeking water. Over time, this may result in moisture build-up under the nipple. In freezing coops, icicles may form. As long as the water at the nipple remains unfrozen, birds will have a source of water.
Replacement cords must be matched to the type of receptacle found on the base of the bucket. They are NOT interchangeable.
When connecting the detachable cord to the base, make sure the alignment notch slides easily into the groove on the bucket’s receptacle. (See photo below.) Unfortunately, it’s easier than we’d like to misalign the prongs. The result is a non-functioning unit until it’s aligned correctly.

I’ve had the heated poultry waterer for 4 years now. It works exactly as it should even in sub zero temps. The biggest headache was the lid being frozen on when the condensation froze at the edge. The new lid took care of this only issue. Thank you Premier 1 for another product that you improve for exactly what we need.

I bought this heated chicken waterer about 3 months ago. I love the convenient features it has — detachable cord & covered fill hole in the lid makes my life SO MUCH EASIER!! I have been very happy with this replacement up till now. These past couple days the weather has gotten extremely cold — single digits at night & day time temps are only 20°F, so the water and nipples were frozen this afternoon when I went out to check on the chickens and see if the waterer was actually performing as expected. I was bummed that it was not. I put this new waterer in the same location as my old one & never had issues with the water or nipples freezing before, and this one seems way more insulated than the other one, so I don’t know if it’s the heating element or maybe my power.
- Ensure the cord is plugged into the bucket correctly. The alignment notches should be lined up. There is a photo showing this in the Troubleshooting section.
- Make sure a circuit breaker or GFI outlet isn’t tripped.
- Make sure the unit is out of the wind and ice/snow. The water and nipples may freeze if exposed to direct wind.

Extremely pleased with this waterer. Definitely get a scale with it as it will help you know the water level. The extra long cord is great too! Love that all I have to do is bring a water hose to it and fill — no more heating pans that rust and only last a few seasons also.

Originally, I wrote a review after purchasing that my chickens wouldn’t use this item. Customer service reached out and asked me if I read the packet sent with troubleshooting help. I hadn’t received any so they quickly and kindly provided me with excellent service. They were great at helping me solve why my chickens wouldn’t use the item and within days of the tips, my chickens did indeed take to this product! I was quite happy to have a backup water source available at all times in case the rubber pans were tipped over, etc. I’ve now owned this item many months and as soon as the temperature went down this week (29 F), the nipples are completely frozen though plugged in. The water inside isn’t frozen but the nipples are. I can’t even push the nipples to loosen them back up into working condition. I’m afraid this product has been a wasteful purchase for me. I would have contacted the individual who helped me again before reviewing but I’ve since deleted emails (not expecting this issue), and no longer have her email. I hope it works well for others. For now, I’m back to all rubber pans.
