This waterer does its job well—which is providing access to fresh, clean, unfrozen water during winter. Nothing fancy. We find it best to set on a cinderblock so the nipples are at about head high for the majority of the flock (lower if bantams are mixed in). We have used these waterers in temps as low as -20°F (in the coop and protected from wind). The integrated lid handle is useful for carrying water from a hydrant or for hanging the waterer in the coop.

I have 6 backyard chickens and our de-icer failed on us this year.

This bucket worked like a charm and has greater capacity than our old container. Chickens are happy and I am happy.

This waterer has worked great so far. Our temps have been averaging between 9–15°F. The nipple valves have never froze and my chickens always have clean water. Highly recommended. I do have my waterer on top of an upside down bucket to get the height for the chickens to drink, but it’s very stable.

Be watchful as the temperatures rise that melted snow and ice (water) doesn’t pool on top of the upside-down bucket and seep into the waterer’s base. The heating element in the base of the waterer was not intended to be submerged. A wet element is a sure-fire way to trip a circuit breaker.

We’ve had a few reports of this from folks who’ve used buckets as stands. — Premier

I had this for a couple of years now and loved it until this winter when it kept freezing the nipples & having ice inside. Would not buy again for the price I paid.

I bought this in August of 2023 so this is my 2nd winter with it. I removed the cord during the summer and love the fact that wild birds don’t come into the coop to get water. This winter and recently in the last week my power kept tripping. Of course it was during the coldest week with below zero temps. I narrowed it down to the waterer so I brought the entire unit in the house to clean it out as I didn’t want it to freeze and break. After 4 days I took it back out to the coop. Power was running from my heavy duty extension cord from the house and my heat lamp was working. I unplugged the lamp and plugged in the waterer. In a few seconds the power tripped again. I’m buying a replacement cord and hope this will fix the problem. I’m disappointed since I had the cord removed over the summer. I had it in a bag and put the cap over the plug in spot. I’m not sure what could’ve gone wrong. I just hope the problem is in the cord. Time will tell. I would have rated higher if I weren’t having problems with it owning it just over a year.
