Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

This is a marvelous invention! So much safer than a lamp, and obviously better for the chicks' sense of security. My chicks are so quiet and calm! The only noise they make is that little contented peeping in their throats. They can control their own temperatures and feel safe with somewhere dark to hide. They also get to sleep in the dark instead of bright light 24/7. It's the next best thing to a live hen. Very easy to use and adjust the height. I (and my chicks) are very happy with it!

This is a great product. Uses less energy than a heat lamp and is much safer too. Our chicks sleep so quietly at night. I purchased the cover to go with it too. I love that it is easily adjustable to accommodate the chicks as they grow. Fast shipping too! ! !

We have both the large and the small plates. The small is just big enough for 20 chicks. Definitely get the cover. The chicks sleep so quietly all night long... much better than when we used the heat lamp. The large is quite a bit hotter than the small, but chicks seem to know how to adjust themselves to keep at the perfect temperature.

Wonderful product. Much better than the heat lamp we were using. I echo the other commentors who say the sizing suggested by the manufacturer is generous. I bought a large for 12 chicks and that seems about right. It did NOT come with the cover that keeps the chicks from jumping up on it so be aware of that.

Love these....lower electric usage plus safer. Have several of the large ones and chicks are comfy and happy. Large says good for up to 50 but I think that's a bit over stated...up to 40 is more appropriate by my experience. Definitely go with the covers...tried them first without and I was cleaning them off frequently.
