Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

This heating plate is by far the best design on the market today and I have tried several. It's super easy to adjust the height with just a click of a button. It's durable (I haven't worn one out yet)and the price is also the best I have found. Premier1 shipped promptly and it arrived before I was expecting it.

I lost half of my flock in July to a racoon including most of the 8 chicks I raised in april. I wanted to purchase a brooder after I raised this year's chicks. When this happened I searched for an inexpensive one for just a few chicks. This brought me to Primier1. The order came quickly, in time for the new chicks. I also got the cover to keep it clean. My chicks are doing beautifly! The temp is perfect and no danger of fire. I did make a little 'skirt' which goes around 3 sides of the brooder. This gives the chicks more of a 'hen' feel. The price was the best and free shipping!

My chicks are healthy and happy. Seem a lot happier.

We have 3 bantams and the brooder is in our living room. I am so glad we bought this, I was so worried if we had used a light these chicks would've peeped all night long keeping everyone awake. Best purchase by far. We also bought the cover to keep them off the top of the heater. Chicks need warmth not light, I am so glad we found this before bringing our babies home.

This was the best "Piece of Mind" that we could of EVER purchased. I don't worry about an electrical fire nor any harm to our chicks. They love it and so do we!
