Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

These are perfect for raising chicks! So much safer than bulbs. And the comfort of being underneath a mom-like shape keeps them calmer and happier. It really makes a difference. Super easy to change the height as they grow. I highly recommend these for happy, safe chicks.

Love the heating plate, our chicks stay nice and warm under it!!!

I haven’t had an opportunity to use the heaters yet. Our chicks are scheduled to come mid May. Due to the climate in Northern Minnesota. We are forced to start chicks later in the year being it can still drop down blow 30 degrees towards the end of May. I gave Premier 1 five stars for the timely matter of delivery. It was extremely fast even during the current virus issue affecting the United States/world. I had the heaters in less than one week from time of placing the order!

These brooders are good, not as dangerous, and cover plates stop the nastiness associated with the brooders that don't have covers. I don't know why they sell the legs separate because they are tough, I can't see breaking one... don't get hot at the wall or cord, chicks don't seem to need more. Good for chicks, ducks.

Love the heating plate - easy to use and it is amazing how quickly the chicks grow and it is easy to adjust the height. Love the option of having one side higher than the other. Having the plastic dome keeps the chicks off the top effectively as they were trying to jump up there at 1 week.
