Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

Easy to assemble and use! We are using this while we are raising 7 ducklings in my hoop house. Once the sun goes down - the heating plate is turned on. All of the ducklings huddle under the heating plate which is a size small. They are very happy when they are underneath it and hardly make a noise now. Will be transitioning them out into a tractor soon and then we'll use it for our meat chickens for a short time.

Absolutely fantastic. All of the wonderful reviews are true.
With the plate angled the chicks are able to decide where they want to be. They are so happy and quiet that I have to keep checking to see if they're still there :)
Highly recommend. I will be purchasing more as my hatches increase in size.

I haven't actually used it for chicks yet. I did use it to warm a sick chicken. It is well built and easily adjustable. From experience, I would tell potential buyers to be sure to buy the plastic "cone" cover. Otherwise, chicks will get on top of it and make a horrible hard to clean mess.

Good idea... but it fails... The device gets dangerously hot... the plate at the side reaches 128 degrees... that would cause 3rd degree burns after 20 seconds of contact. It is even hotter in the center. I am going to put a dimmer switch on it so I can use it. (thankfully i have the expertise to do so) because I have chicks and have no other option. Otherwise it would be going back. Very disappointed. I purchased 4 of these. Very bad unsafe product.

Chicks seem to like it a lot! They are under there most of the time and quiet! I have it set higher on one side because the chicks are a little different in size. So far I really like this plate!
