Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

This is a must have if you are raising baby chicks! Please take it seriously how dangerous red bulbs are and how detrimental they are to not just the chicks but to your life as well! These heat plates are amazing. My chicks grow faster, they are happier, healthier and after close to three weeks, they don't even sleep under the heat plate! They have naturally grown accustomed to the 68-70 degrees that I keep my home at. I would recommend always buying bigger then what you think you need. The small easily fits 20 day old chicks but they grow fast. You want them to have plenty of room. Finally, please buy the cover! It would be so silly not to. I don't have to clean any poopy mess on top of the heat plate everyday like some complain of. They haven't tried to roost up there because I keep the cover on. The legs are incredibly easy to adjust and shipping was very, very fast. Amazing company to do business with. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Ordered 4 (Large) Heat plates covers 100 chicks each. Going to replace the 60 year old 5 tier brooder heat source. This will save me tons of money in electricity and have healthier chicks. Will probably order a smaller one for my single tier very old Brower and replace its heating source.

Just received our chicks via mail. Tried the proverbial heat lamp first. Chicks were not happy. Put the heating plate into the brooder and within minutes they were tucked under it and content and Quiet!! Thanks again for a wonderful product!

Chicks try to jump on it (Cover for Heating Plate) but they slide right off. Does the job.

I have two of these, one of the large size and a small one. These are wonderful. Chicks are much happier and quieter, especially at night, compared to using brooder lights. I always set mine up with one end closer to the floor than the other. That way, newly hatched chicks will snuggle under the warmer end while older ones congregate at the cooler end. This works very well for me since I run staggered hatches year round. Thanks for an excellent product.
