Purchased this item to tattoo cattle, chose it so we could fit all 5 characters on one line. Letters are very small and hard to make out and a couple of the ones I purchased in a second letter set had missing prongs. Would definitely not recommend using on cattle! On about the fourth use, one young calf jerked and broke the tabs that hold the letters in place and those can no longer be used. Overall not very durable and lower quality than hoped for. Might be okay to use on our boer goats and smaller livestock.

We needed a tattoo gun that had the ability to hold 5 letters, and the smaller size of this one did the trick. Also with smaller size of the gun my wife was able to grip it comfortably in her hand. The smaller size made it easier to fit in the ears of our weenling Boer goats. This is a great tool for what we needed.

I think I got a bad one, as it has a crack near the top, where the screw plate attaches by the hinge, and none of the surfaces are square on it at all, unlike a regular precision surgical tool. I was going to try to use it anyway, as we have a show coming up and need to have the animals tatooed. You have to wait a few days to see if the tattos will be legible. The #'s are readable, and our set was missing a letter so we had to wait to do the letters. I was worried that the way the pins on the letters were so erratic, that they might not be readable, and it is true-- they are very hard to read, so the animals might be ineligible for the show. I think I am going to have to send it back and get a Stone brand instead, as if we tattoo the tail and it is unreadable, the animal might be barred from showing for life, reducing the value of the animal.

does its job. i think the letters/numbers should have what they are stenciled on the back. however it is a great tool.
Easy to use, but the letter/number blocks are a bit wiggly, even after tightening the screw on the little bracket that holds the blocks in. I do like the fact that the blocks can only go in one way so there are no upside down numbers & letters.
