Raddle Powder
Product Details
When applied to the chest of a ram, makes bright, long-lasting marks to easily identify which ewes have been bred.
Benefits:
- Container reseals, so there's no waste
- Works in all seasons and temperature ranges
- Requires no adjustment, less hassle than a breeding harness
Specs
- 3.3 lb container
- 3 colors: red, blue, and green
How to Use
When using mineral oil: Mix 2 parts powder to 1-1/2 parts of mineral oil into a thick paste.
Use OB gloves (to help keep your hands clean) and rub paste into the lower neck/brisket. Apply fresh raddle to brisket every 2 to 5 days. Wool or hair growth of 2 to 3 months on the brisket helps to absorb/release the paste.
Precautions
- Usually takes more than one application. More messy than a breeding harness.
- Marks are NOT always scourable—particularly if vegetable oil is used.
- It is difficult to remove all of the raddle from the animal’s chest in order to change colors mid-season. If you plan to switch colors, go bright to dark or green/red/blue.
- Raddle works best with wooled breeds of sheep. The fiber of hair sheep and goats does not hold the raddle as efficiently as wool.

I really like this product. It was very bright and our ram didn’t seem to mind us slathering him up!! It was very easy to detect on our ewes.

Great product!! It works great, you just have to reapply pretty often.

I really prefer this to tempra paint, tinting color or marking harnesses. I have used vegetable oil and liked mineral oil better. I am going to try the crisco this season. Hoping it will last longer. I usually put it on daily (I use plastic gloves) so if we can go longer that would be better. I did as another reviewer stated and put it in a gallon ziplock bag to mix, then cut the corner to squeeze onto my hand. I really like the green color. The red and blue aren't as dark so they don't cover the green as well as I would like. If we could get a yellow to start the season then I would give it a 5 star.

Ordered red and green raddle powder in 3.3# pails. The pails came in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box, with numerous "fragile" stickers. Nonetheless, upon arrival, one of the pails had split and the bag was full of raddle powder.
Used the powder on Katahdin Rams, after mixing with Crisco (shortening). A single application continued to make good marks for about a week, and I need to reapply it.
I've seen it suggested that chalk-line powder may be a cheaper and equally effective product.

This is an invaluable tool to know when to expect lambs from each ewe and which ram they are breed to. Works great w/ Crisco. It does need to be applied fairly often, a week is pushing it. It sticks really well on my katahdin ewes and is visible for several weeks. Cleans right up w/ dish soap and water.
