Shepherd’s Choice™ Management TipIn areas with excess moisture and humidity, add an anti-caking agent to the trace mineral salt to prevent the mixture from clumping. As an alternative, reduce the amount of salt offered to a weekly supply, or less.
Several anti-caking agents are specific for salt. They are calcium aluminum silicate, calcium silicate, calcium stearate, magnesium stearate or magnesium silicate. The inclusion rate should start at 1% of the salt mixture and can go up to 2%. Diatomaceous earth can also be used at a 2% inclusion rate.

We have been using Shepherd’s Choice premix for several years and are happy with it.

This seems to be the best source for sheep mineral, especially during lactation and lambing.

Living in a selenium deficient region, it is so important to supply supplemental selenium for the flock. I originally was recommended to use this decades ago from the late Dr. Kennedy at Pipestone Vet Clinic. I called about a uterine prolapse epidemic I was experiencing that year and learned that lack of selenium makes ewes more prone to prolapse. I started offering this product mixed in with feed grade salt and have not had an issue since. He also noted that buying a mineral block is not effective as the sheep will chew on the block because the block is held together with molasses. With this premix the sheep only eat what they need making it a more economical option.

I have been using this product for years, I used to get it from Pipestone, and the quality is great and my animals do great on it. I use it on all my sheep and my lambs find it very palatable.

This product works good for what I need up in our area. I like it because you mix with salt and I’m done. No need to mix with grain.
