Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

So glad I finally bought this and the cover. So easy to set up. Easy to adjust as they have grown. The chicks are warm out in the barn, and don't have to have light on them 24/7. I feel like they are less stressed and are more comfortable. I also don't have to worry about the dangers that come with a light bulb.I got the large for the current 34 chicks I have. There's plenty of room. Wish I'd bought one years ago! Great product Premier!

Great product that is keeping the chicks warm enough on these chilly fall nights. MUCH better than worrying with the fire hazard heating lamps. I'm not sure if 50 chicks could really use this, but there is lots of room with the 10 that I have. This product is significantly cheaper than the competition and does the job.

So glad I bought this product. I will never go back to those metal brooder lamps and bulbs. I used to worry the light would fall or cause a fire but with this heat plate everyone can relax. Even the chicks! They come and go from the heat as they need it, just as they would with a real hen momma. It is very quick and simple to adjust the height as they grow. I keep mine slightly higher in front than back to allow for bigger or smaller hatch mates to find a comfortable spot. The top surface is a favorite place for chicks to sit so it gets messy quickly. If you don't want to clean it daily you may want to get a cover.

I like the idea of the cover to keep the dust and debris off of the plate. It will be easier to clean and it will protect the plate, making it last for yrs to come.

This is the best investment we have made for raising chicks. Our chicks came last Wed. and we haven't lost one, there is usually a small amt that over the first few days don't survive but ours are all happy and healthy. Plus, I don't have to worry about the safety of the heat bulb and I get a lower electric bill. Win/win for us!
