Length—How to choose?
The shape and length of the handles help determine the hand strength required to squeeze the trimmer. Maximum leverage isn’t always desired; many shepherds prefer comfortable trimmers that fit their hands for all day use.- Longer blades may reduce the # of overall cuts needed; blades longer than 2" can clear most hooves with one cut
- Shorter blades are better for precision work

These are my go to trimmers for hoof trimming on Icelandic sheep. Icelandic sheep grow hoofs at a phenomenal rate just like their wool. We trim them twice a year and probably should do it 4 times a year. Even with these trimmers it can be hard but with others it is impossible. I keep a large number of trimmers on hand as we have lots of volunteers that come help with the spring and fall shearing and we trim at the same time.

Best foot trimmer I believe on the market. Have purchased one in the past and will purchase one again in the future.

I hate leaving only 4 stars, because I really do love these hoof trimmers. They're sharp, they hold their edge a very long time, they're heavy duty without being too huge for small hands, they are easy to grip, they're more ergonomic than others so they're easier to use, etc. I really like them, and I just bought two new pairs because they truly are the best I've tried. And I've tried a lot. I have about 8 other varieties that I never use any more because they're really problematic in some way. But despite the ARS being the best on the market, they have one significant problem that they shouldn't have.
The central nut/bolt that holds the two pieces together rusts. Now that I know that I will take better care of my new pairs by keeping some anti-rust oil on them. But I shouldn't need to go thorough this extra step. Having this feature in such an otherwise good quality trimmer is disappointing. Surely there is a rust-proof option for this nut/bolt? Maybe, maybe not?
Because of this rusty nut/bolt, the spring failed long before the handles and blades. The rusty nut/bolt creates more resistance to opening, so after only 3 years I literally have to open them manually after every cut. The spring is no longer strong enough to push them open automatically. Of course, I don't want a spring that is so strong that it makes it harder for me to close the blades for cutting, but if the resistance to opening didn't increase with rust, the spring would likely be able to do its job longer.

Love these trimmers! They are comfortable to use. This is our first time trimming our herd of 42 goats and they are holding up nicely.
