Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

I wouldn't use anything else for my chicks for several reasons.
1. The product is sturdy and well made; far superior to other products I have used.
2. The plate and cover are very easy to clean and the legs can be adjusted easily with heights for any size hatchling.
3. From bantam chicks to goslings, they all love going under the plate. They seem to feel safer and have a regular day/night schedule.
4. Chicks raised under the plate seem calmer and healthier than those raised under a light.
5. The customer service here is very good. I contacted them with an issue and it was resolved quickly and with a friendly attitude.

So happy with this investment. Obviously more expensive than a heat lamp. But what peace of mind not worrying about a fire. It’s hilarious to watch the chicks run and duck under the plate!!!
Very well made and will last for many more chicks to come!

I had no issues with this heating plate. My 14 chicks loved it and there was more than enough room. I did go back and purchase the cover for the heating plate and highly suggest going ahead and ordering it when you order your heating plate if you don't want chick poop all over the top. I tried covering with a towel and they just drug it off and pooped on top anyway. LOL! I love the fact that the legs were adjustable and allowed me to raise the height as the chicks grew. Highly recommend.

The heating plate is performing as expected. However, the instructions say to adjust the plate so it just touches the backs of the chicks. Do not do this. The plate is too hot to hold your hand on, and would burn the chicks. I have it adjusted at its full height for now 3 day chicks, and it keeps the litter at 95 degrees with ambient room temperature at 75 degrees. When the room temperature increases, the chicks move from under the plate and are active throughout the brood area. I will place blocks under the legs as the need to increase the distance to the litter increases with chick growth. I would encourage the manufacturer to place some sort of shield (silicone perhaps) between the metal heat plate and the chicks.
A Heating Plate Temperature Controller can be used to control the temperature (between 20%–100% of full output.)
