Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

Purchased three of these so far, for my chicks and ducklings. The chicks and ducklings seem very happy to nestle underneath the plate, which keeps them happy and warm while saving electricity. Definitely keep an eye on the height of the plate and adjust frequently as they grow quickly!

The heat plate works great, but I did have 2 chicks get burns on their backs. After contacting customer service, they suggested raising the plate and keeping it all at one level. The chicks are fine, but I would probably buy the thermostat controller as well. I’m also brooding outdoors in the coop (lowest ambient temp was 25°F), so I’m very pleased overall with the heat plate and would buy it again. I also bought the cover but decided not to use it to maximize brooder space. That may be a decision I come to regret when it comes time to clean it, but I’d probably not buy the cover again. All in all, a great purchase!!!

These are a bit of an investment but so much safer and better than a heat lamp. Chicks adjust naturally just like under a mother hen. They are fire safe and use less electricity. Love them!

Works great and keep the little chicks warm when we had an unexpected 4°F cold snap come through for 3 nights! Very pleased since not a single tiny chick died in their outdoor barn with this heat source! After a neighboring barn burned to the ground from a heat lamp fire, we started looking for alternatives. This has outweighed our best expectations since we thought the weaker ones might not survive. The cover is great. Adjustable legs for height of growing chicks is easy. Again, we are very happy.

I had two main reasons for purchasing this product.First and foremost was one of security.Having a heat lamp on in the house 24/7 gave me the willies and having to keep changing heights to achieve the right temperature as well as securing the lamp didn't seem all that easy.I am an 81 years old lady and the simplicity and security of the Premier heating plate appealed to me.My chicks arrived yesterday and they are happy using the plate and it certainly has not deceived me.It is well made, the available cover is a nice option and I like that a red light shows you that the plate is working.
