Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

Love, love, love this thing. I got the largest size available as we raise lots of chicks here on the farm. The birds migrate to the unit naturally it seems and the amount of heat produced is substantial to the point of being hot to the touch. I felt it was a quality product just lifting it out of the box, not some junk from China that will fall apart or malfunction before the sun goes down. The height adjustment is easy with a good positive latching mechanism. I bought the plastic protective dome for the unit and am glad I did as I'd hate to have stinky, sticky, super-glue chicky poo all over this nice device. The dome is over priced in my opinion, probably just a $10 piece of plastic at best, but again I'm glad I went ahead and got it.
No more of those expensive, dangerous, power hogging 250 watt light bulbs. Up, down, too hot , too cold, will it break, will it burn out, will it start a fire? Never again!
Further, I can get my birds onto a natural day/night schedule as opposed to them having to glare into that scalding light 24/7. I've read birds are healthier and less likely to become neurotic and begin pulling feathers out of each other in this case. I believe it. This thing is a winner for me provided it continues to operate outside the warranty period of one year.

I gave this 4 stars because it was a bit pricey. Also, I had to call the company to get the height dimensions. It was listed in the catalog or online. Customer Service even had to send someone to actually measure the height. I was worried it wouldn't fit in the brooder when I raised the legs to full height. It works and I didn't have to adjust the brooder. I love that it keeps the chicks off the top of the heating table.

I love this product, I find this method far superior to using the heat bulb method. Safe, easy to use, no worries about overheating the chicks

Saves electricity and the chicks are happy with it. Chicks run under it when frightened. The plastic cover is a must or the chicks will Doo what chicks Doo.

Bought the extra small and it is plenty large enough for my 7 chicks. Easy to set up and easy to use. Been using it for 5 days so far and the chicks seem to love it. They hunker down under it to sleep and stop in under it occasionally while they are moving around to warm up. I bought the lid and it stays clean. Very simple. I would buy it again.
