Incandescent Bulbs
Illuminate your coop and extend your chickens’ laying rate during the low-light months of winter. Low-wattage incandescent bulbs produce a “warm” wavelength to stimulate the hen’s reproductive cycle. The result? A year-round supply of eggs.
15 watt bulbs are compatible with all standard “screw-in” fixtures, including the Prima Heat Lamp. Connect the lamp to a Programmable Timer to save energy.

Tips
By providing artificial light, growers can manipulate this natural cycle to their advantage and increase the egg laying potential of their flocks.
Artificial light needs to be applied when the day length approaches 15 hours per day; which happens in September. By applying extra light in the morning rather than the evening, chickens will naturally go to roost with the setting of the sun.
To improve winter egg laying:
- Install a warm frequency light in the coop above the feeders and waterers (a Prima Heat Lamp works well as a protected light source). The light needs to be just bright enough to read a newspaper. If possible, eliminate shaded areas within the coop. (Reposition the lamp or reorganize the coop to reduce shadows.)
- Schedule the light using a Programmable Timer to control when the light comes on in the coop. Begin mornings earlier rather than extending the evening. Hens and pullets can have up to 14–16 hours of total light per day (additional light does not increase egg production). For example, if the sun rises at 6am and sets at 6pm, set the timer to turn the light on at 2 am.
