Benefits
The GOLD Formula difference…
Formulated by Premier’s small ruminant nutritionist, Dr. Dan Morrical, Ph.D., Sheep Trace Mineral Premix contains high levels of zinc and iodine to promote healthier hooves, animal growth and reproduction. (Hoof growth is a long term process so benefits may not be seen for several months of continuous feeding of this trace mineral salt mixture.)
Dr. Morrical builds on the work done by Dr. Kennedy of Pipestone Veterinary Services. In addition to increased levels of zinc and iodine, Sheep Trace Mineral Premix contains additional selenium (to the maximum level allowed by the FDA), manganese, and cobalt to maximize flock health and immunity. Molybdenum has also been increased for more protection against copper accumulation in the liver—sheep absorb copper more efficiently than goats.

Limestone is used as a carrier for calcium.
How to Use
Thoroughly mix Sheep Trace Mineral Premix into 50 lbs of feed mixing salt. Provide in weekly amounts to the sheep flock to prevent wastage from weathering.
Sheep are expected to consume .25 oz of mixture per head per day. If sheep are in confinement, also add 2 lb of Sheep/Goat Vitamin A/D/E Premix. Our research determined that when vitamins are added to a premix, they begin to degrade and lose their effectiveness. The shepherd can slow this break down by keeping vitamins and minerals separate, until they are ready to be fed.
Note: Bag labels indicate mixing 1 lb of A/D/E with the mineral premix. We suggest to mix 2 lbs of A/D/E with mineral mix for sheep consuming the mineral in confinement (i.e. without access to fresh forage).
For flocks needing calcium and phosphorous, add 20 lbs dicalcium phosphate and 10 lbs of limestone to the 55 lb salt mixture. Intake should increase to .5 oz of mixture per head per day to ensure adequate micro-mineral consumption. If intakes are not adequate, 5% molasses or processed grains can be added to increase palatability.
Always provide a source of fresh, clean water.
Tips
Shepherd’s Choice® Management Tip
Adding Deccox to trace mineral salt mix is a means of treating pasture lambs. However, the dosage is tricky. Ewes need 0.5 mg per kilogram of bodyweight. (E.g. If ewes are 154 pounds, or 70 kg, they need 35 mg per day.) In a 55 pound mix of Sheep Trace Mineral Premix with salt, add 5 pounds of 6% Deccox®.* Lambs may not eat enough to be treated. One can double the inclusion rate as Deccox is quite safe.In areas with excess moisture and humidity, add an anti-caking agent to the trace mineral salt to prevent the mixture from clumping. As an alternative, reduce the amount of salt offered to a weekly supply, or less.
Several anti-caking agents are specific for salt. They are calcium aluminum silicate, calcium silicate, calcium stearate, magnesium stearate or magnesium silicate. The inclusion rate should start at 1% of the salt mixture and can go up to 2%. Diatomaceous earth can also be used at a 2% inclusion rate.

This is a fantastic product! It’s extremely cost-effective, it doesn’t rely on the cheap ploy of flavor additives to coerce consumption, and it does an excellent job of correcting the Selenium-deficiencies caused by our region’s soil composition.
We raise Jacob sheep—primarily the four-horned variety—so horns are as big a concern as maintaining strong hooves for healthy feet. I pay PLENTY for a quality non-GMO feed and very good hay; I cannot afford supplementary additives.
Thankfully, I do not have to; our flock has done extremely well on this for the past 5 years (so much so that our Vet now recommends this mix to other shepherds.) It’s extremely simple to mix a bag of this into 40lbs of copper-free salt and set it out for free-choice consumption, and I am delighted with the results.

Good quality mineral premix for an affordable price.

Shipped quickly and directions were easy to follow. Have yet to see how our herd likes it.

Premier’s supplements for sheep and goats are top shelf. Mix with your loose trace mineral salt and ensure that your flock is up to speed on all fat soluble vitamins and minerals. Hard to choke the high shipping costs—and due to our lovely political mess, some stuff can’t be shipped to California. Have a friend out-of-state get it for you.

Been using this mix for several months now and have seen a marked improvement in hoof health/strength since using it.
Previously we were using 1:1 Thorvin kelp and salt and we liked it, but it wasn’t serving the flock well when it came to their hooves and it’s very expensive. First, we offered the sea kelp/salt mix side-by-side with the Premier 1 mineral and it seemed they preferred the sea kelp, but we noticed when the sea kelp ran out and they were using only the Premier 1 mix, hoof health improved!
We now add a bit of Thorvin to this mineral mix so we still have that kelp meal in there but aren’t relying on it solely for a complete mineral. The mix of the two seems to be a great option.
I love it that I can still find a mineral mix for sheep that contains copper…so hard to find nowadays! Great pricing as well. Keep up the good work!
