Easy-to-use (and move!) garden and critter fence. Line posts are already built into the fence and can be inserted and removed by hand without tools. Hand tension is all that is required. 20" tall installed.

Key features:

  1. Very close mesh spacing. Lowest energized horizontal strands are 2" apart and the verticals only 2" apart.
  2. It’s short. So it’s easy to install and remove. Also, most adults can easily step over it.
  3. Highly adaptable. Like all of Premier’s nets, they almost self-adjust to irregular shapes, curves, corners, etc.
  4. VersaNet® Plus has line posts every 6.8 ft. More posts means less sag and a more versatile fence.
  5. Two colors available:
    • White & Black — Most visible. Use when aesthetics are less important.
    • Green & Black — Less visible. Use where aesthetics are important and there is less likelihood of contact by uninformed human visitors.

New to electric fence? Premier’s Starter Kits may be a good choice. They include netting, extra support posts, a solar fence energizer, ground stake and a digital tester. Already have an energizer? Choose a netting kit instead.

Benefits

Keeps out raccoons, opossums, woodchucks, fisher cats, small dogs, rabbits and skunks, or as a barrier to ducks and geese. Can also be used for beehive protection from small ground-based critters.

End posts act as built-in gates—just disconnect the power and remove an end post to make an opening.

Easier to step over and costs less per ft than 30" VersaNet Plus.

Installation

You can install most rolls within 5–15 minutes.

The same “unroll and then unfold” process applies to all electrified nets. Minimal strength or skill needed (and no tools). Extra supports such as FiberTuff™ step-in posts are useful at corners, curves and ends. You will need a fence energizer to electrify the net.

Ensure the net is at least 2" away from anything metal (e.g. T-posts, existing wire fences, spikes on support posts, etc.)

See PDFs and videos above for additional installation instructions.

Common Questions

Does VersaNet® stop squirrels?
A properly energized fence (3000V or more) will keep most unwanted varmints out, but we can’t promise good results with lightweight critters such as squirrels and chipmunks. Squirrels are cunning; they often jump onto the fence without making any ground contact. Without good foot-to-soil contact, they won’t receive a memorable shock. (This is also why birds can perch on power lines without being electrocuted.)
I have more length than I need. What should I do with the excess?
An electric fence does NOT have to make a circle. You can overlap the fences or make a U-turn.

100' of netting creates a 25' x 25' enclosure. Add additional rolls if you need to protect a larger area. At each end of the net is a built-in, stainless-steel male/female clip. Slide these clips together to make a connection.

How to Manage Excess Netting
“I’ve set up my fence but there’s more than I need. What do I do?” This video demonstrates our preferred methods of working with excess netting.

Visit this link for answers to other common fence questions.

Precautions

Electric fence is a pain barrier, not a physical barrier. A common mistake is not electrifying it. Animals may escape or become entangled (and may die). On a % basis, entanglement is very rare, but it can and does occur. If animals are scared or starved it will not keep them in (or out).

Netting must be moved when tall grass covers the lower “hot” strands. The alternative? Apply a strip of herbicide to reduce green vegetation.

Warning! Due to risk of fire, do NOT use continuous output energizers with electric netting or electro-plastic conductors such as rope, twine or tape. Use only with a low or wide impedance intermittent pulse energizer. (Fi-Shock™ brand energizers which are sold as low impedance, continuous current output should NOT be used with electric netting.) All energizers sold on Premier’s website use an intermittent pulse and are suitable for use with electric netting.

Dry conditions and wintertime usage may reduce the effectiveness of electric fencing. Ice and heavy snow can flatten netting and thereby damage it.

Dry or frozen ground may cause posts to bend or break if inserted with force. Pilot holes may be needed. We recommend using drivable or single spike posts in hard soils. Double spike posts provide more stability when the ground is soft.

Troubleshooting

If the voltage drops below 3000V on the net, you need to turn off the energizer and unhook the net from the energizer. Test the energizer first. If the voltage is 5000V or higher on the energizer, the problem is in the net.

If possible, separate the fence into sections. Then progressively reconnect, checking voltage as you go. When the voltage drops, you’ve identified the section with the problem. Listen for snapping sounds. This occurs when a conductor is close to a grounded wire, metal objects, fallen branches, or other green vegetation causing a “short”. Shorts cause fence voltage to collapse and allow animals to touch the fence without feeling pain.

Live “hot” strand caught on bottom of steel post
Live wire touching a steel post
With VersaNet®, the lowest live strand may be caught under the PVC and touching the post’s metal spike causing a “dead short”. (This may occur with end posts, too.) Separate the energized wire from the steel spike and recheck the voltage.
Heavy green vegetation will drain the energy out of an electric fence
Live strands touching the soil
Heavy green vegetation will drain the energy out of an electric fence. In areas with rapid grass growth, weeds can render netting useless by midsummer. Mow (or move) the fence line often, or spray a herbicide to reduce grass contact.

Warranty

With proper care, netting should last 5–7 years. Replacements will be prorated.

Listed below are recommended optional components. Your particular situation may require alternative recommendations. Please call and talk to our fence consultants if there are any questions at 800-282-6631.

We have used VersaNet® as a successful barrier to keep wild geese from coming off of a pond and onto neighborhood common areas. (The excessive poop was becoming a nuisance.) Since we opted for the green version, the fences blended into the background and didn’t clash with the local landscape.

Easy to set up. Needs daily walk to check for things that blow into it. This 20 inch high fence even shocked a deer into not ever coming back. I use it to surround my gardens from plant predators.

It stopped a deer in its tracks even though I bought it to keep the rabbits out of my garden. I came close to the fence and the electricity jumped to my very close finger. I know why the deer wont come back. It is very well built and stands up straight. One suggestion is to pull the bottom and top tightly when pushing into the ground.

I already had one 50 foot section so this year I decided to buy another to completely enclose my garden. It keeps my plants safe from all the varmints that like to eat my vegetables before I do. Very easy to step over and so much easier on my old back than using the heavy duty poultry netting we bought for my wife's chickens.

Squirrels discovered my garden this year, and took every single peach and tomato from my garden before they were ripe. I tried natural "repellants" (bone meal, blood meal, coffee grounds, vinegar rags, and hot pepper spray) and none of them worked at all, squirrels took every tomato for 3 weeks. Once I purchased and installed this electric netting/fence, I have not had a single tomato eaten/stolen. This product worked great for me. My peach harvest is gone for the year, but I still have 2 months of tomatoes to enjoy. Looking forward to a squirrel-free garden in 2019.

Very easy to install around my garden. Ordered 100’ and it came in 2-50’ sections which is great because I’ve only planted half my garden. Hopeful it will keep my chickens & other critters from eating & digging up my newly planted produce. Would definitely purchase again.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
