VIMCO® targets Staphylococcus aureus and CNS (Coagulase Negative Staphylococci), the bacteria most commonly associated with mastitis.
Implementation of a mastitis control program is an essential step in improving milk quality and preventing infection.

Shepherd’s Choice™ Management Tip
While VIMCO® is USDA approved for use in dairy and meat goats, the animal trials were completed in Europe. No third-party testing was done in the USA.That said, producer reported reactions are uncommon. When they do occur, they are most often in an uncontrolled environment.
For example, say a producer was vaccinating a group of goats. The producer used herding dogs to corral the animals and then vaccinated them. A few days later one aborted and two had swellings. Was this from the vaccine, or the stress of herding them with dogs? Was it rough handling, a contaminated needle, wet animals, etc.
To minimize adverse reactions:
- Never vaccinate a wet animal
- Always use a sterile needle to puncture into the bottle of vaccine
- Always keep vaccine cold
- Inject SQ (under the skin) by the neck or behind the front leg
- Have clean hands when handling syringes, vaccine and needles
- Discard a needle when it gets burred, bent or touches anything other than the bottle stopper or animal
Dosage & Administration
Store and transport between 35°F–46°F. Bring to room temperature (59°F–77°F) and shake well before use. Use a clean needle per animal.
All doses must be administered within 12 hours of opening bottle.

3 stars because I have no idea if this actually works, we’ll just have to see as time goes by. However, nowhere on the bottle or the box does it say to shake the product, that info is only in the information sheet that comes in the box. The manufacturer should figure out if it should actually be shaken and if so put that on the bottle and box. We did not see serious reactions to this vaccine, although the entire herd clearly felt punky after their first shot. We are a small commercial goat dairy. I used this product ONLY because a tank culture revealed we had a high Staph Aureus level, and I did individual plate counts on the entire herd to find high goats who were then culled. I would not recommend this product unless cultures show a need for it. And assuming I have stopped the spread of the Staph, I will stop using this in a year or two. Don’t use unless you are in consultation with your veterinarian.

We used VIMCO for the first time last year on approximately 60 head of ewes and 6 dairy does. Mastitis has been an issue in our flock, with several cases every year. We had only one case after using the vaccine. Very pleased. It is expensive, but if it saves one ewe from being culled or one lamb from starving due to mastitis not being caught in time, it pays for itself. I do know a person who had issues with their goats after the vaccine, but that was thankfully not my experience. I plan on ordering again this year.

The Premier team has been great to work with, but we are also undecided on continuing with this vaccine. In our first year of use (this year) we had one of 33 does go into anaphylactic shock 9 minutes after administration. Epinherine reversed the reaction but she aborted two days later. Premier helped us report the reaction to the manufacturer. No other serious reactions with other does, though about 1/4 to 1/3 had lethargy and inappetence as short as 30 minutes after administering. We hope the next round will be as safe, and that our SCC counts and mastitis indeed stay low this lactation. Definitely have something on hand to reverse anaphylaxis just in case (as we do with all vaccines.)

I'm undecided on this product. During vaccinations we had a nanny go into anaphylaxis shock. We were able to bring her out of it. Also, several other nannies experienced rapid heart rates and heavy breathing. Working with product folks to better understand potential effects of this vaccine before we make a decision to continue its use.
