Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

Just received our chicks via mail. Tried the proverbial heat lamp first. Chicks were not happy. Put the heating plate into the brooder and within minutes they were tucked under it and content and Quiet!! Thanks again for a wonderful product!

Chicks try to jump on it (Cover for Heating Plate) but they slide right off. Does the job.

I have two of these, one of the large size and a small one. These are wonderful. Chicks are much happier and quieter, especially at night, compared to using brooder lights. I always set mine up with one end closer to the floor than the other. That way, newly hatched chicks will snuggle under the warmer end while older ones congregate at the cooler end. This works very well for me since I run staggered hatches year round. Thanks for an excellent product.

My chicks took right to it. Easy to adjust as they grow.

After over a year of using 250 watt light, I needed to find an alternative that is SAFE and BUDGET FRIENDLY. I decided on two(2) 12x12 plates.
Application:
Temperatures dropped to 28 degrees at night where I live and had the plate in the brooder section of my walk-in coop. I placed a temp reader under it and the plate maintained 89 degrees In the middle area of the plate and protected my day olds. I read to angle the plate (lower in back and higher in front) to better allow chicks to find there comfort zone. I agree with us set up.
Product:
The product is genius! The legs are easy to adjust and made of a very hard plastic. The legs will never bend. The product reads 20 chicks for 12x12 and that is right for day olds, but number of chicks is less as they get older (naturally). The cover is a must-have too. Chicks will jump up on-top and poo all over it.
Thoughts:
Perfect for me. I have a small Silkie farm for hobby and have 17 hens with 1 rooster. The 2 plates is great for me.
