Benefits

The GOLD Formula difference…

Formulated by Premier’s small ruminant nutritionist, Dr. Dan Morrical, Ph.D., Goat Trace Mineral Premix contains high levels of zinc and iodine to promote healthier hooves, animal growth and reproduction. (Hoof growth is a long term process so benefits may not be seen for several months of continuous feeding of this trace mineral salt mixture.)

Dr. Morrical builds on the work done by Dr. Kennedy of Pipestone Veterinary Services. In addition to increased levels of zinc and iodine, Goat Trace Mineral Premix contains additional selenium (to the maximum level allowed by the FDA), manganese, and cobalt to maximize flock health and immunity. Copper has been increased with no added molybdenum (ties up copper) for better milking production.

GOLD vs. SE/I (when mixed with 50 lb plain salt)

  GOLD Formula
Goat Trace Mineral Premix
(ppm)
Selenium & Iodine Premix**
(ppm)
Selenium 90 88
Zinc 22,700 21
Iodine 545 196
Manganese 1,454 15
Cobalt 54.5 4
Copper 4,545 0
Molybdenum 0 3.5
Cost per doe, per year* $2.38 $1.26
* Costs are cheaper for the SE/I premix since you use only 1 pound with 50 pounds of salt. The difference is that the GOLD premix meets all the trace mineral needs of the herd. SE/I does not provide adequate zinc, cobalt and manganese. ** SE/I trace mineral salt provides almost no zinc, cobalt and manganese and may result in deficient diets. Goats should not receive molybdenum because it increases the chance of copper deficiency.

Ingredients: Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Mineral Oil, Calcium Carbonate, Manganous Oxide, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide, Sodium Selenite, Ferrous Sulfate, Cobalt Sulfate.

Limestone is used as a carrier for calcium.

How to Use

Mix 5 lbs of premix with 50 lbs of plain salt.

Thoroughly mix Goat Trace Mineral Premix into 50 lbs of feed mixing salt. Provide in weekly amounts to the goat herd to prevent wastage from weathering.

Goats are expected to consume .25 oz of mixture per head per day. If goats are in confinement, also add 2 lbs of Sheep/Goat Vitamin A/D/E Premix. Our research determined that when vitamins are added to a premix, they begin to degrade and lose their effectiveness. The shepherd can slow this break down by keeping vitamins and minerals separate, until they are ready to be fed.

For herds needing calcium and phosphorous, add 20 lbs dicalcium phosphate and 10 lbs of limestone to the 55 lb salt mixture. Intake should increase to .5 oz of mixture per head per day to ensure adequate micro-mineral consumption. If intakes are not adequate, 5% molasses or processed grains can be added to increase palatability.

Always provide a source of fresh, clean water.

Tips

Shepherd’s Choice™ Management Tip

In areas with excess moisture and humidity, add an anti-caking agent to the trace mineral salt to prevent the mixture from clumping. As an alternative, reduce the amount of salt offered to a weekly supply, or less.

Several anti-caking agents are specific for salt. They are calcium aluminum silicate, calcium silicate, calcium stearate, magnesium stearate or magnesium silicate. The inclusion rate should start at 1% of the salt mixture and can go up to 2%. Diatomaceous earth can also be used at a 2% inclusion rate.

Precautions

CONTAINS HIGH LEVELS OF COPPER. DO NOT FEED TO SHEEP.

Goat producers should be cautious using copper oxide wire particles in addition to our goat trace mineral packs. Overuse of copper oxide wire particles for parasite control could result in copper poisoning in goats. Consult your local veterinarian or Dr. Dan Morrical (sheepadvice@premier1supplies.com) on the copper status of their operations.

Intake above .25 oz per head per day will exceed the allowable FDA intake levels of .69 mg of selenium per head per day. To reduce intake of the trace mineral salt mixture, dilute with more salt and/or move feed locations further from water sources or congregation areas.

Read all warnings and cautions on label. Follow mixing and feeding instructions carefully. For livestock use only.

Goat Trace Mineral Premix

I have been using this mineral for 2+ yrs after trying commercial and custom blends.

No extra copper or bo-se needed in general. In my herd of 100 I have quick placenta releases, soft hair coat even in winter, no hoof issues and no mastitis issues. I believe this mineral (when mixed with the Vitamin ADE) creates a stronger immune system and fights off normal everyday herd health issues.

I like that you can "talk" with the nutritionist inventor too.

After being told by multiple professionals that my goats were normal and that’s just the way things are with goats I went on a self education mission. After researching the symptoms in my goats and the local deer population, I decided I needed new minerals/vitamins.

After several emails back and forth with Dr. Morrical (from Premier’s Ask The Expert service) in which he was very patient and helpful, I decided on this Goat Trace Mineral Premix.

The first time I gave these to the goats they smelled them through the bucket and I thought they were going to kill me to get to them even though they still had the previous minerals. Then I almost panicked as I watched the goats consume giant mouthfuls. I have been using these for about a year now and the goats consumption went down to normal soon after using them.

My goats now are so much healthier! No more of the symptoms I was seeing before! Their coats look awesome and their hooves grow well, too! Thank you so much Premier 1!!!

Since I started using this premix a year ago, I’ve seen amazing improvements all around! Nor more signs of selenium deficiency, which previous minerals weren’t addressing; many more triplet births, stronger kids, fewer disease issues with does, better hair coats and better hooves. Give it a try for a few months, you’ll see the good results!

I fed these minerals, mixed with feed salt, to a herd of eight goats that previously didn’t have access to free-choice minerals. At first they went nuts on it and almost immediately were running around and playing like I’d never seen before. After the first day, they have only taken what they seem to need and it looks like it will last a long while. The benefits are absolutely noticeable to these goats.

This product seems to have made a huge improvement in the coats and general health of my goats. I have reordered it and bought 2 packages to make sure I don’t run out.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Dr. Morrical now serves as Premier’s on-staff small ruminant nutritionist and sheep production advisor. Most recently, he’s introduced a line of “GOLD FORMULA” mineral premixes under The Shepherd’s Choice® brand, aimed to maximize hoof health and immunity.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
