Use a Heating Plate Temperature Controller which allows control of Premier's Heating Plates output between 20% - 100% of full output.
Benefits
Heating plate advantages over a heat lamp:
- Uses much less electricity. Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of the much lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold above) prevents older chicks from perching on top and fouling the unit with droppings. However, the plate can be hand-washed (do not submerge in water) to remove dust and debris.
How to Use
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch? It isn't. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it for a time. Don't overcrowd—chicks need to have space to move around as they like.
When the heating plate is plugged directly into the outlet, the red light comes on and stays on.
When it is plugged into the Heating Plate Temperature Controller, it will blink based on the min/max adjustment. Slow blink toward minimum and quicker toward max. If you turn it all the way up, it will come on full time.

I had two main reasons for purchasing this product.First and foremost was one of security.Having a heat lamp on in the house 24/7 gave me the willies and having to keep changing heights to achieve the right temperature as well as securing the lamp didn't seem all that easy.I am an 81 years old lady and the simplicity and security of the Premier heating plate appealed to me.My chicks arrived yesterday and they are happy using the plate and it certainly has not deceived me.It is well made, the available cover is a nice option and I like that a red light shows you that the plate is working.

Product came in a very timely manner. I have not used it yet, but in setting up my first brooder with a heat lamp and leaving the house all day to test it for temperature, it just left a pit in my stomach. What if the heat lamp goes out and I lose my precious babies? What if somehow it moves and hits against the cardboard or bedding and creates a fire? I think its a sound investment giving peace of mind and a more natural feeling heat source for the chicks.

Only four stars because I haven't used it yet; my chicks arrive in late March. But I was very impressed with the construction and design. Looking forward to setting it up. In this area there have been multiple barn fires many with loss of livestock in the past few weeks and all but one was attributed to an unattended heat lamp (one was faulty electrical wiring). No heat lamps for me!

Haven't had a chance to use it so as to give a completely accurate review but have talked to several that use these and only heard good things. But as far as service and getting the product to us the experience has been great.

I bought the 16x24 heat plate and top. My chicks hatched 3 days ago and it is like they knew what to do. What a great product, it's like having a mother hen. I would highly recommend this product. I have used heat bulbs in the past but this is a much better and safer idea. Also saves on your electricity.
