Discontinued — Solar powered 0.60 joule fence energizer. Portable all-in-one unit arrives ready to power electric fence or netting.

IntelliShock® electric fence chargers are able to reduce energy demand when the fence’s voltage is high–due to fewer weeds touching the fence. This occurs in fall and winter for most fences and occurs all year for some horse, cattle and deer fences. As a result, an IntelliShock unit’s battery is more likely to remain charged through the low sunlight days of autumn and winter.

Update – December 2023This item is sold out. The Solar IntelliShock® 100 is new for 2024 and now available. Also look to the SolarStop™ 80 for a similar alternative.

Replacement parts, including PCBs and transformers, remain available. —Premier

Common Uses

A solar powered energizer often used with electric fences to contain sheep, goats, poultry, swine, cattle and horses. Effective against predators such as coyotes, stray dogs, bears and foxes.

Can also be used with garden and wildlife fences to keep out deer, raccoons, woodchucks, rabbits, opossums and skunks.

Solar powered energizers are a popular choice when 110V power is not easily accessible. Attached solar panel will recharge the battery on sunny days.

Benefits

  • External 110V adapter port for faster plug-in connections for recharging.
  • Solar panel is easy to adjust for seasonal light availability.
  • Included step-in ground stake can also be used to support energizer.
  • Easily accessible fence and ground terminals. Fence and ground wiring harness included.
  • External 110V port allows the energizer to be operated without a battery and plugged into a 110V power source.
  • Large capacity battery for increased life during long periods with low sunlight.
  • Highly visible on/off light with low battery indicator.
  • Won’t rust. Made from durable UV-treated polycarbonate.

How to Use

Open the energizer lid and connect the wires to the battery as indicated on the enclosed sticker. Remove the U-Spike and wiring harness from inside the battery compartment.

Using 10mm wrench, remove the bolts holding the solar panel in place and replace with the supplied knobs (shipped inside the unit).

Step in the ground U-Spike. For added support, you can slide the energizer onto top of U-Spike.

Use the wiring harness to connect the energizer to the ground stake and fence.

  1. Unscrew the red terminal knob.
  2. Secure the bare end of the wire with the orange clip into the pre-drilled hole behind the red terminal knob.
  3. Replace the red terminal knob and tighten.
  4. Repeat steps #1–3 for the black ground terminal.
  5. Connect the black clip to the ground stake.
  6. Connect the orange clip to the fence.
  7. Turn energizer on. (When switching on, make sure the power button is pressed all the way in.)
  8. Check the voltage to ensure the fence is properly electrified before introducing animals.

Optimal Solar Orientation and Placement

Correct placement of the energizer and solar panel is critical to the best operation of the unit.

1. Position the energizer so that the solar panel faces due south. This will allow the panel to receive the maximum amount of sunlight possible even during the low-light days of winter. Consider the sun’s movement throughout the day and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes or tall grass.

2. Determine the correct tilt angle for the solar panel. The sun’s position above the horizon will change from season to season. As a general recommendation, an angle of 50° is optimal for the longest use in most areas of the continental USA. However, the ability of the solar panel to recharge the battery can be maximized by making angle adjustments each season as shown in the illustrations below.

Suggested Solar Panel Tilt Angles - Northern USA
Suggested Solar Panel Tilt Angles - Southern USA

In the far northern USA from November until February, there may not be enough hours of sunlight to fully recharge the battery. Charge the battery externally when the battery indicator light flashes green/red or red.

3. Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel. This includes grass clippings, dust (especially on gravel roads), leaves and snow as this will reduce the solar panel’s ability to recharge the battery.

Precautions

For livestock use only.

  • Make sure the power is turned off before working on the fence or the energizer.
  • Make sure the fence line is clear of grass and debris that may lower the fence’s voltage.
  • Ensure the solar panel is facing due south and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes or tall grass.
  • Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel.
  • Batteries that are less than 40% charged may become damaged. Batteries MUST remain fully charged in freezing conditions.

To Reduce Risk & Liability

  • Never place your head or upper spine near an electrified wire. Accidental head or neck contact can occur when pushing a voltage probe into the soil. Be careful when doing so to avoid head-to-wire contact!
  • Never attempt to step over or climb through an energized fence of any kind.
  • Never encourage anyone to touch an electric fence.

Troubleshooting

You’ll need an electric fence tester (included with kit) to measure voltage.

Start by measuring the voltage at the end of the fence line. If the voltage is below 3000V, follow these steps to determine if the problem is with the fence, or the energizer.

Test the energizer first!

  1. Turn off the energizer.
  2. Disconnect the wires going to the fence and ground stake/rod.
  3. Turn the energizer back on.
  4. Measure the voltage on the energizer between the two terminals (positive and negative) with a digital voltmeter or other high-voltage tester. Touch one end to “-“ (earth terminal) and the other end to “+” (fence terminal). The reading tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables.
  5. If the tester reads below 5000V, then the energizer (or possibly the battery) is the problem. If the voltage is above 5000V, then the trouble lies with your fence.

If the energizer is at fault:

Determine if the battery or the energizer is the problem.
  • Test the battery with a low-voltage tester; recharge if lower than 12.2 volts
  • Check the grounding system
LEARN MORE

If the fence is at fault:

Re-attach the fence and ground wires to the energizer and turn it on. Then, walk or drive along the fence looking for situations that are reducing the voltage:
  • Conductors touching another wire, steel post or the soil
  • Broken or damaged insulators

Storage

Tips to preserve battery life:

  • Turn off the unit. Disconnecting the unit from the fence is not sufficient, the unit will still pulse unless it is turned off.
  • Clean off the solar panel. Dust and debris may have accumulated during use and as a result prevents the panel from maximum electrical production.
  • When the energizer is not being used, store the unit indoors at room temperature and out of the sun. Do not let the energizer sit in the sun for an extended period when it is turned OFF as this could damage the battery.
  • When not in use, ensure the battery stays above 40% charged. Lead acid batteries don’t work well when they’re left discharged, or at a low charge, for long periods of time. Periodically recharge the battery in the sun or with the included 110V charging unit. Stop charging the battery at or above 12.6V when checked with the included fence/battery tester. Do not overcharge the battery.

Warranty

3-year warranty for energizers and solar panels cover lightning damage and defective parts or workmanship. Should an energizer fail, we will replace the unit, bill you for the cost to do so, then reimburse you for warranted expenses after we have examined the failed unit. Misuse and flood damage are not covered.

30-day warranty for all batteries.

After much research, we landed on this product. So far, I couldn’t be more pleased. It seems to work great, simple and straight forward hook up. It’s easy to tell if it is on and working. I was not wanting to spend that much money, but I’m glad i did and hope it lasts a long time. The little tester is a great as back up, to check. Very pleased and highly recommended.

Seems to work well once I was able to figure out where to attach to the fence. The directions are horrible and don’t explain hooking it up to the fence very well.

We needed to purchase solar fencing for our garden at our farm, many deer, bear, and small critters. We watched many videos of other people that installed solar fencing and decided to purchase from Premier1. We are so pleased with the fencing, the quality, the easy installation process. We would buy this product again! Thank you Premier1 for making it so user friendly. Great products!

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
