A lightweight, non-electrified net enclosure for chickens and other poultry. Best when used as a monitored day pen for adult birds and chicks. Allows you to move your flock to fresh grass quickly and easily. Features a built-in step-through gate.

Because this fence cannot be electrified, we recommend that you move your birds to a safe, secure location at night. NoShock™ Hen Pen will NOT stop predators.

For protection from predators, look to Shock-Or-Not™ Poultry Fence which can also be used a day pen for young birds.

Benefits

Chick-tight mesh
Chick-tight mesh
16" height (from bottom) prevents small birds from escaping.
Double-spike posts
Double-spike posts
Step-in design for added stability in loose soils.
Built-in gate
Built-in gate
Quick access in/out for feeding your chickens.
  • Keep supervised free-range flocks out of flower beds, gardens, patios, roadways, etc. Great for folks with backyard chickens.
  • Keep in chicks and ducklings when they are too small to be contained by PoultryNet®.
  • Install around the garden to put ducks on “slug-patrol”.
Why do we suggest to energize netting elsewhere but offer non-electric here? Because some folks watch their birds carefully during the day and move them inside at night (far less predator pressure). They can successfully use a fence that is non-electrified. Also, some municipalities do not allow electric fence in backyards.

Specs

  • 48" tall installed
  • Black nylon mesh
  • Lower 16" of netting has small 1.75" spacings to reduce the likelihood of chicks escaping the paddock (compared to 2"x3" spacings on electrifiable PoultryNet)
  • Upper 32" of netting has larger 4" spacings
  • Fiberglass posts (1/2" dia.) are exceptionally stiff and feature offset double spikes: 4.5" and 3". Posts are NOT pre-installed.
  • Step-through gate hardware is included
  • Available in two lengths:
    • 39 ft length—includes 6 double spike support posts, step-through gate, 4 corner tie backs and 16 tie-down stakes (used to anchor net)
    • 68 ft length—includes 10 double spike support posts, step-through gate, 4 tie backs, and 24 tie-down stakes

How to Install

Note: Assembling the Hen Pen is more time consuming (and cumbersome!) than our electrified nets because the line posts are not already built into the mesh. This allows you more flexibility for spacing the posts, but it also means more work.

Installation Tips

  • Before installing line posts, stretch the net out in an open area. For best results, ensure posts are woven through the mesh using the same vertical columns.
  • The white post caps come detached to allow you to easily weave the line posts into the net without snagging. If desired, an acrylic adhesive can be used to permanently secure them to the post.
  • Many find building a circular pen easier than creating a square or rectangular space. Why? Because measured post spacings are not as critical. To begin, secure the first and last post together. Then create a small circular enclosure with the remaining posts. Progressively expand the circular area outward to add tension. For more support when using a circular enclosure, position the posts so the double-spike faces inward.
  • When moving the pen, or for storage, walk along the fence, removing the posts from the soil and holding them in your hand in a tidy bundle. This allows the loose netting to fold together into pleats. After all posts have been collected, lay the netting onto the ground and roll up the folds towards the bundle of posts. (This “fold and then roll” process is very similar to our electrifiable nets.)

Consult the assembly instructions (linked above) for additional information.

Precautions

NoShock™ Hen Pen is non-electrifiable. This netting is intended for day pens only, not a night pen. Use it to contain (or exclude) your flock during the day, and either lock them in the coop or behind electrified netting at night.

For flighty birds, clip their flight feathers on one wing to prevent escape.

Rabbits, chipmunks, mice and other small critters may chew through the nonelectrified strings of the HenPen causing damage to the fence.

Bought the 39 ft fence for a run to my nursery part of my coop for my chicks.

I like that they are metal poles as the heat has deformed the poles on my other poultry fencing I use for my pasture, these poles will definitely not warp.

I did this setup by myself and it was fairly easy, just lay the fencing out on the ground and stretch it out, then weave the gate pole at one end and another pole on the other end, then evenly space the other poles or if you are doing a rectangle set up like I did, place the end poles against your coop and stretch the fencing out as far and wide as you want to go and weave poles at those two corners, then attach the anchor lines using the tent pegs to keep your corners tight.

I also stretched bird netting over the top of my run and attached it with twist ties to keep the hawks from getting my chicks.

This fence is easy to move around or take down to mow or reposition.

The spacing of the fence at the bottom will easily keep chicks in without the danger of them getting tangled. This no shock fencing is inside my larger pasture with the Premier1 poultry netting that is shock so there’s no worry about predators getting through it and I do not let the chicks out unless I’m home and they are inside the nursery coop at night.

I would highly recommend this fence for use with chicks or if you need a small pen for injured chickens or other fowl to recover in. It’s heavy duty and will last for years. Too bad we can’t post pictures.

Not the easiest fence to set up. Took multiple times to get it right and still not happy.

I ordered the NoShock Hen Pen to give my new pullets some extra run space during the day before I introduce them to my existing hens. It adds a very spacious ranging area and keeps my pullets happy. Because of a constant hawk threat, I also bought a hawk net to ensure security throughout the day. I still confine the young girls to a secure, permanent run/coop at night, but I feel like they are safe and well protected throughout the day. I also love that this fence is so easy to move around when I need a fresh ranging spot. I am very pleased with this Premier product.

I got the 68' NoShock Hen Pen. I LOVE IT! It’s a bit pricey and pretty short really but I attached it to some existing permanent fencing to make it so much bigger. My chickens have a run but no grass so I wanted something we could move around easily in the grass when we sit out there to keep the chickens close as we have a hawk issue. We never leave them in it when we leave. I would have had to been a genius to ever figure out the instructions but luckily I had watched a video and was able to put the fence up before my husband got home. I am SO glad I purchased it. For what it is, it’s perfect.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
