Q-flex EID/RFID Tags

Electronic identification ear tags (EID, also called RFID) have an embedded transponder microchip (FDX-B) that provides instant identification of the animal via a radio frequency reader. Q-flex EID Tags are compatible with any ISO-compliant EID/RFID tag reading device.
Premier’s farms have used EID ear tags for 10 years. Our shepherds are able to conveniently track and identify every member of the flock electronically.

How RFID works:
When an ear tag transponder enters the electromagnetic field transmitted by the RFID reader it draws power from the field and will send its data to the reader. There are two common forms of transponder encoding used in animal identification: FDX-B (full duplex), and HDX (half duplex). FDX tags, such as the Q-flex EID Tags, can be made very lightweight and thin, which reduces strain on the animal’s ear.Each Q-flex EID Tag has a unique 15-digit number imprinted on it as well as an electronic transponder enclosed in a weather-resistant polyurethane. Our tags use technology standards established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This ensures that all ISO-compliant tags can be read by all ISO-compliant readers, regardless of manufacturer.

Customization
Female sides cannot be customized, but are pre-printed with a unique manufacturer EID number. Premier has no control over this number. Multiple packages of 5 may not be consecutive in number, but are consecutive within a package of 5.
Male sides can be custom imprinted with:
- Consecutive numbers or farm/ranch name
- Up to 2 lines of 13 characters

How to Use
Use the Q-flex, Pro or Allflex® applicators to install the tags:
- The male and female tags will come to you slightly connected. You will need to tear them apart.
- Place the flag of the female tag under the metal spring finger. The printed side of the female tag will be against the jaw of the applicator. Slide the male tag over the metal pin. Be sure to push it all the way onto the pin. The printed side of the male tag will be against the other jaw of the applicator.
- Make sure the tag is correctly placed. Slowly squeeze the handles together to be sure the male pin aligns with the female opening (be careful to not put the tag together yet).
- Place the ear between the jaws of the applicator. While gripping the ear, quickly and firmly squeeze the handles together until the male tag is inserted through the ear and into the female tag.
Tag placement is critical to success! Avoid the large veins in the ear. Why? Tissue around damaged veins heals slowly—so it’s prone to infection.
Precautions
Inserting Tags In Cold Weather
Plastic tags (all brands) are much easier to install if they are warm. Why? As the temperature drops below freezing plastic becomes less flexible (more stiff) and forcing the male point of a tag through the female takes many more lbs. of pressure (because the female must expand).So if you care about your hands it’s a good idea to keep the tags above freezing in very cold weather. It takes very little to do this. One method is to simply store them while tagging in a small bucket, cardboard box or tool box with a lid alongside a sealed pop bottle full of warm water. The warm water will keep both the air and the tags warmer in the container.

These work great for lambs less than a month old but the pegs routinely bend and break when the lambs are older than that. 100% worked great in 1-2 week lambs but many failures in 4–5 monthers. I have used Q-flex for years, have the applicator and have never had an issue, but these are badly manufactured.

RFID Tags work very well but it would be nice if they came in two colors. We would like to tag ewes one color and Rams a different color. It would also be nice if the web connecting the front and rear tags were a bit stronger. The web helps keep the tags from disappearing into the ear when left unbroken but these webs are fairly weak and do break.
