Shepherd’s Choice™ Management Tip
While VIMCO® is USDA approved for use in dairy and meat goats, the animal trials were completed in Europe. No third-party testing was done in the USA.That said, producer reported reactions are uncommon. When they do occur, they are most often in an uncontrolled environment.
For example, say a producer was vaccinating a group of goats. The producer used herding dogs to corral the animals and then vaccinated them. A few days later one aborted and two had swellings. Was this from the vaccine, or the stress of herding them with dogs? Was it rough handling, a contaminated needle, wet animals, etc.
To minimize adverse reactions:
- Never vaccinate a wet animal
- Always use a sterile needle to puncture into the bottle of vaccine
- Always keep vaccine cold
- Inject SQ (under the skin) by the neck or behind the front leg
- Have clean hands when handling syringes, vaccine and needles
- Discard a needle when it gets burred, bent or touches anything other than the bottle stopper or animal
Dosage & Administration
Store and transport between 35°F–46°F. Bring to room temperature (59°F–77°F) and shake well before use. Use a clean needle per animal.
All doses must be administered within 12 hours of opening bottle.

This product has helped prevent low grade mastitis which has been a problem with our dry summers and the goats in lots of dust. The service I got was terrific! I got the right advice and a quick delivery. The product was kept cold very well.

I hope this works, because it’s awfully expensive and has a short shelf life (most of our other vaccines are good for a couple years). I noticed there is a bare spot, minus hair, on all the goats that were vaccinated. It shows up when they are clipped, all in the same spot, so I know that’s what caused it.
For the person who is worried about having to throw it away after you use it, you should be able to keep it until the expiration date. Just make sure you use a clean needle to draw up, and always clean the top with alcohol before inserting a needle. What I like to do is use one needle, just changing syringes, to draw up several doses. I put a new needle on each syringe, so I am only tossing one needle when I’m done. Pushing it through the rubber stopper dulls it badly, so it’s best to change needles anyway.

This review is not on effectiveness of vaccine but shelf life! If you need two doses 3 weeks apart and don’t use all vaccine in the vial then basically you have to throw away unused vaccine, because after vial is punctured it is only good for 12 hours! And if you don’t buy several then the air freight on these will be exorbitant.

Good product, happy to have something goat specific. Customer service wasn’t super helpful. I meant to buy 3 but only selected 2. I called within and hour or two asking to add the additional bottle and they wouldn’t do it even though it hadn’t shipped yet. I’d rather not pay another $40 shipping fee for 1 tiny vial.

We are hoping that the vaccine is effective against mastitis. One of our farm advisors says that it is working on other farms so we used it to vaccinate our sheep flock this year.
The only complaint we have about the order is that the vaccine is only available in small vials to dose 5 animals at a time. That meant buying many, many vials to cover the entire flock twice. Perhaps Premier 1 is waiting to see if customers will buy it before providing larger vials? A vial that would provide enough vaccine for 25 or 50 sheep would be appreciated as it cuts down on the time spent vaccinating. Time is what we have the least of.
