Tissue collection units (TCUs) contain a liquid preservative and can be sent to a laboratory for analysis. The shelf life of the genomic material is preserved for several years when stored in a freezer. Samples can be shipped to the lab with no cold packs.
To keep everything linked together, vials are identified by barcode using the same 15-digit Animal ID encoded into the transponder and visually imprinted on each tag panel.

How to Use
Use the Caisley Applicator to install:
- The male and female tags will come to you slightly connected. You will need to tear them apart.
- Press the black clamp and slide the female part of the tag under the metal spring finger. The printed side of the female tag will be against the jaw of the applicator.
- Slide the male tag over the metal pin. Be sure to push it all the way onto the pin! The printed side of the male tag will be against the other jaw of the applicator.
- Ensure the male pin aligns with the female opening and both tags are fully seated. (Don't squeeze the applicator yet.)
- Place the ear between the jaws of the applicator. While gripping the ear, quickly and firmly squeeze the handles together until the male tag is inserted through the ear and into the female tag.
Tag placement is critical to success!
Whenever possible, tag when the ear is dry and clean. Avoid the large veins in the ear. Tissue around damaged veins heals slowly—so it’s prone to infection.
Designs that allow air near the wound will heal more quickly. For best results, apply an antibiotic, a fly repellent and/or a disinfectant to the ear tissue or tag.

Common Questions
- Why does the identification number start with 840?
- EID tags that begin with the numerals 840 are considered an official animal identification tag by the USDA. Having an Official ID allows for interstate travel, along with disease traceability, data capturing and sharing. With USDA tags, a Premises ID (PIN) is required.
You can apply for a Premises ID for through your state’s animal health department.
- What is the difference between HDX and FDX tags?
- HDX and FDX tags both adhere to ISO standards and are compatible with the same EID readers. HDX tags excel at transmitting signals through interference, such as metal objects and fluorescent lights. FDX tags are suitable when read range is less critical. Typical read ranges are 15–18" for HDX tags and 13–16" for FDX tags.
- Does the EID tag save information or track movement?
- No. An EID ear tag utilizes a very low frequency which is only readable from a short distance. It does not use GPS tracking technology.
When an EID tag is scanned, a unique 15 digit number is returned. You can use this number in your own software or equipment to track the health and genetic records for the animal.
