I like the chalk for short term (hours instead of days) marks, such as marking animals as they are vaccinated. It wears off quickly, so animals aren't covered in multiple marks throughout the year. Works well on wool, not so well on hair. The chalk does slip down in the holder pretty frequently, which is a minor annoyance. It works just fine without the holder and isn't that messy anyway.

It's chalk. It could really stand to be softer, it takes a little effort to get a good swipe on a nose, I use it when trimming hooves & worming to keep track of finished animals in the corral.

Doesn't really hold the chalk tight enough, no real advantage to having it.
