The LAC-TEK II Milk Feeding System is a heavy-duty automatic milk feeder for up to 120 orphan lambs and goat kids. Designed to provide a constant, uniform and easily accessible supply of milk replacer or formula for large flocks/herds.

Update – November 2022The manufacturer (Biotic Industries) has discontinued the LAC-TEK Stainless and LAC-TEK II. We’ll offer replacement parts as long as they remain available and will continue to offer repair service for all models.

Benefits

The machine automatically mixes small quantities of powdered milk replacer/formula with warm water at a desired concentration. The mix is made in regulated batches. When the milk level goes below the sensor, the feeder starts a new batch. Animals take the mixed liquid by means of a rubber nipple.

  • Provides milk for up to 120 orphans
  • Produces very uniform lambs/kids at weaning
  • Mix only what you need—less spoilage
  • Built-in thermostat warms water to a preset temperature, up to 110°
  • Adjustable milk/water ratio for desired concentration as animals age
  • Daily cleaning takes about 10 minutes
  • When used on our farm, nipples lasted for 100 lambs
  • 6-month manufacturer’s warranty

Specs

  • Dimensions: 20" x 22" x 30"
  • 6 lamb/kid nipples. Note: Add in hose splitters (not included) to accommodate up to 12 nipples to feed more lambs.
  • 6 nipple connectors
  • 18 feet of nipple tubing
  • 3 nipple panels—up to 6 nipple panels can be used with this unit. Additional nipple panels available under the "Replacement Parts" tab
  • 2.5 gallon reservoir (for warming water)
  • 50 lb capacity stainless steel hopper for milk powder
  • Rating: 110 volts, 1500 watts
  • Operating manual

How to Use

Unit attaches to a hose (use a female to female hose adaptor to connect the hose to the feeder) for continuous water access (can be used with a pump). Milk replacer is stored in a hopper above a mixing chamber. A sensor indicates when to draw down replacer and mix it with water. Mixture flows partway through tubes via gravity. Lambs/kids sucking action pumps the milk from the reservoir to the nipples.

Nipples are not pre-slit. Hole size depends on the age and vitality of the lambs. To make the hole, start small (14 gauge needle or pinch the end and put a small slit in the end with a pair of scissors) then enlarge if needed if the lambs struggle to get milk flow. Too large of a hole and there is a risk of the lamb breathing in the milk.

Precautions

  • Nipples must be set 1" above the level of the milk in the mixing bowl.
  • If mixed milk has cooled lambs won’t be eager to consume cold milk. Not a problem unless only 1-2 lambs/kids.
  • Spoilage can occur in warm weather.
  • Warm temperatures may cause milk to froth which covers the sensor. This delays the mixing of a fresh batch.
  • Must be kept from freezing. Some build an insulated box and/or install a heat lamp.
  • Requires a 20 amp breaker.

We use Auto-Feeding LAC-TEK Machines to rear over 100+ lambs/kids during our lambing/kidding seasons. We prefer automatic milk feeders because the animals are of equal quality to those raised on a mother at weaning.

Like almost everything you buy, they get it to third base but never a home run. When the lambs are working the machine hard (they tend to all want to feed at the same time), it will kick out and you have to reset it. Thats fine and dandy if you are around but if you are not, your lambs go without milk until you come around to reset it. We are too busy to live around our machine so this is a constant irritant. We bought our machine in 2019 and it’s done its job in spite of kicking out on us far too often. Also, why don’t they design the machine to hold a little over a 50 lb. bag? Nobody fills it when it’s completely empty so it needs a hopper to hold a bag plus about 20% more to accommodate how things are done in the real world. Then there are the threads on the screws that hold the cup and top cover. They are unnecessarily long. They want you to clean it every day and spinning off and on the wing nuts for those long threads gets to be annoying. Yes, I would recommend it to those who have a lot of lambs because it’s a huge labor saver but they need to tweak some things.

Here's an update on my Lac-Tek. Not only can you not get the same amount of powder to drop out each time. Now it can't keep up with 6 lambs at the same time. It will turn itself off and you have to turn it off and back on and hope it resets. No way this will feed 60 lambs. I have 22 and it doesn't cut it. Check out their liability disclaimer, says everthing.

Calibration is at best, just a lucky guess. You can only hope that the same amount of power comes out each time. If you can get past that, it seems to work ok.

Raised 21 lambs, I pulled a triplet out of each bunch a pair from the quads. Lambs at 4 and half months weighed up to 100 pounds! By far the best way to raise orphans or handle those extra lambs. Most of them exceeded the weights of the ewe raised lambs. And in most cases I kept the runt of the litter for machine raising. 30 to 40 days the machine ran. Almost without a problem. Only change I will make next year is two sets of hoses so I can swap them out to speed up cleaning. Machine has to be kept clean but once you get the hang of it it takes minutes far faster than washing buckets or bottles. The only thing I will do differently is start the lambs on the machine earlier. I was holding them until they were out of the jugs and it was harder to convert them to the nipple on the machine.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.

Note from the manufacturer of BioWorma®

At this time, we will NOT be able to supply any BioWorma or Livamol with BioWorma in the foreseeable future—this is about as frustrating as it gets and all I can do is apologize to you and ultimately our very supportive customers.
