Benefits
- 2-piece design vs. closed loop
- Ear injuries may occur if/when a closed loop tag catches on a foreign object or if improperly placed in newborns’ ear. As the animal matures, a closed loop may prohibit normal tissue growth, resulting in disfigured ears.
- Easy-to-read + FREE custom imprinting
- Premier’s visual MiniTag has long been a producer favorite due to its superior retention and large, readable flag panel. This proven design is now available as an official USDA electronic ear tag for sheep and goats.
- Air vents promote healing
- Slots on the female button allow air to circulate around the wound site, reducing the chance of infection.

How to Use
Use the Caisley Applicator to install:
- The male and female tags will come to you slightly connected. You will need to tear them apart.
- Press the black clamp and slide the female part of the tag under the metal spring finger. The printed side of the female tag will be against the jaw of the applicator.
- Slide the male tag over the metal pin. Be sure to push it all the way onto the pin! The printed side of the male tag will be against the other jaw of the applicator.
- Ensure the male pin aligns with the female opening and both tags are fully seated. (Don't squeeze the applicator yet.)
- Place the ear between the jaws of the applicator. While gripping the ear, quickly and firmly squeeze the handles together until the male tag is inserted through the ear and into the female tag.
Tag placement is critical to success!
Whenever possible, tag when the ear is dry and clean. Avoid the large veins in the ear. Tissue around damaged veins heals slowly—so it’s prone to infection.
Designs that allow air near the wound (e.g. MiniTag EID) will heal more quickly. For best results, apply an antibiotic, a fly repellent and/or a disinfectant to the ear tissue or tag.
Customization
Female buttons cannot be customized, but are assigned a unique animal EID number that is registered with the USDA. Premier has no control over this number.
Male flag panels can be imprinted with consecutive numbers or a farm/ranch name. (Up to 2 lines of 11 characters.)
Custom imprinted ear tags are NOT returnable.
Common Questions
- Why does the identification number start with 840?
- EID tags that begin with the numerals 840 are considered an official animal identification tag by the USDA. Having an Official ID allows for interstate travel, along with disease traceability, data capturing and sharing. With USDA tags, a Premises ID (PIN) is required.
You can apply for a Premises ID for through your state’s animal health department.
- What is the difference between HDX and FDX tags?
- HDX and FDX tags both adhere to ISO standards and are compatible with the same EID readers. HDX tags excel at transmitting signals through interference, such as metal objects and fluorescent lights. FDX tags are suitable when read range is less critical. Typical read ranges are 15–18" for HDX tags and 13–16" for FDX tags.
Tips
As the temperature drops below freezing, plastic becomes less flexible and forcing the male point of a tag through the female takes more effort because the female side must expand.
So if you care about your hands, it’s a good idea to keep the tags above freezing in very cold weather. It takes very little to do this. One method is to store tags in a small bucket, cardboard box or tool box with a lid alongside a sealed pop bottle full of warm water. The warm water will keep both the air and the tags warmer in the container.
