Rubber “O” Rings
“O” rings are commonly used for docking lambs or castrating ram-lambs and goat kids. These elastic bands can be expanded with an elastrator tool and slid over the tail or scrotum (including testicles), and then released.
Constricted ring will steadily squeeze arteries supplying area with blood. Without blood, tail and scrotum will dry and drop-off over a period of 10–20 days.
Available in resealable storage bag, or hard plastic container.
To expand the “O” rings, use:
Specs
- High-density latex rubber
- 100 “O” rings per package/container
Tips
Common mistakes:
- Failing to ensure that both testicles are actually in the scrotum below the ring (tricky with baby lambs and kids).
- Applying rings before a lamb is 24 hours old, up on its feet, nursing and active may interrupt nursing and thus predispose lamb to rapid death from E. coli problems (“watery mouth”). Many wait a day or two to apply on twins, triplets and orphan lambs.
- Rubber rings can cause tetanus. Be sure to vaccinate ewes or does with a booster dose prior to parturition.

I can buy bands locally but prefer to order these orange bands. They seem to do a better job of constricting which, after all, is what we want bands to do.

Good quality, never had one break. Bright orange color is easier to find when dropped than the green ones too.

These "O" Rings seem to be a little softer and go on the applicator easier and don't fly off when you go to open up the applicator to slide on the tail. Not loosing as many was we did with green ones, easier to find when you drop one.

These rings have the added advantage of being bright orange. They are much easier to see on a dark animal so you can visually check the band placement quickly and see the band is still on later. The rings are much easier to find when I drop them than the green ones I was using so many less get wasted.
