*Kits include all the parts and pieces that folks new to electric fence normally need to make the fence operational.

Should Power...**

  • 1 mile of 3 strand cattle fence
  • 1/2 mile of a 5-7 strand sheep fence
  • 6 of the 164' sheep/goat nets
  • 3 of the 164' poultry nets
**All distances are dependent on amount of grass/weed load on the fence. Low-impedance circuitry produces a short, very strong electrical pulse designed to cope with moderate weed load.

Miscellaneous

  • Requires a grounding system. Inadequate grounding is the most common failure in an electric fence system. We recommend 3 ft. of grounding for this energizer.
  • 12V DC draw: 42 mA/hr. With this energizer a 12V 100 ampere hour, deep cycle battery will last approximately 59 days* on a clean or a weedy fence. *Assumes being drawn down to 40% between recharges.
  • To operate as a solar energizer, run the unit as a battery unit (DC) and attach a solar panel to charge the battery. (6 watt panel recommended.)

Energizer Specifications

  • 0.50 released joules
    • 0.50 joules in moist soils
    • 0.26 joules in dry soils
  • Pulses per minute: 40
  • 12V DC draw: 42 mA/hr
  • 110V draw is 4.5 watt per hour
  • Impedance type: low – pulse type
  • Input: AC/DC
  • 110V plug-in adapter with a 6' cord
  • 12V battery adapter with a 40" cord (Batteries sold separately.)

AC adapter and DC leads included with all Patriot P5 units:
  • 110V Adapter/Charger
    • Operates the energizer as a 110V unit when near a wall outlet, 6 ft cord
  • 12V DC Leads
    • To connect energizer to an external battery (batteries sold separately)

Benefits

Versatile, can be used as a plug-in energizer or as a battery energizer. Adapts from one style to the other in a few seconds. Easily moved around. Low cost.

Installation

To use the energizer as a plug-in unit:

The energizer can be mounted either inside or outside of a building, but not where there is risk of fire. The energizer must be mounted vertically. Protect the energizer from direct rainfall.
  1. Connect an MaxiShock Insulated Cable (stripped back 1 - 2" on ends) to the fence terminal on energizer, run the cable to the fence line and connect, or use the positive part of the wiring harness.
  2. Then run a second length of cable from the ground terminal (with ends stripped again) on the energizer to the ground rod(s), or use the negative part of the wiring harness.
  3. Secure to ground rod(s) with a clamp.
  4. Plug the energizer directly into an outlet and test fence. Do not use an extension cord as it may cause a decrease in voltage and expose the unit to the elements.

To use the energizer as a battery unit:

  1. Attach wiring harness to energizer.
  2. Attach the bare end of the wire with the red clip to the fence terminal of the energizer. Attach the red alligator clip to the fence.
  3. Attach the bare end of the wire with the black clip to the ground terminal of the energizer. Attach black alligator clip to the ground rod(s).
  4. Connect the energizer to the battery.
  5. Insert battery adapter into the energizer. Attach red alligator clip from the adapter to the red “+” terminal of the battery.
  6. Attach black alligator clip from the adapter to the black “–” terminal of the battery.

Unit indicator light should flash and a tic-tac sound will be heard. If the indicator light doesn't flash, then the unit/battery should be checked.

Troubleshooting

You’ll need an electric fence tester (included in the kit) to measure voltage.

Start by measuring the voltage at the end of the fence line. If the voltage is below 3000V, follow these steps to determine if the problem is with the fence, or the energizer.

Test the energizer first!

  1. Turn off the energizer.
  2. Disconnect the wires going to the fence and ground stake/rod.
  3. Turn the energizer back on.
  4. Measure the voltage on the energizer between the two terminals (positive and negative) with a digital voltmeter or other high-voltage tester. Touch one end to “-“ (earth terminal) and the other end to “+” (fence terminal). The reading tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables.
  5. If the tester reads below 5000V, then the energizer (or possibly the battery) is the problem. If the voltage is above 5000V, then the trouble lies with your fence.

If the energizer is at fault:

Determine if the battery or the energizer is the problem.
  • Test the battery with a low-voltage tester; recharge if lower than 12.2 volts
  • Check the grounding system

If the fence is at fault:

Re-attach the fence and ground wires to the energizer and turn it on. Then, walk or drive along the fence looking for situations that are reducing the voltage:
  • Conductors touching another wire, steel post or the soil
  • Broken or damaged insulators

Precautions

  • Make sure the power is turned off before working on the fence or the energizer.
  • Make sure the fence line is clear of grass and debris that may lower the fence’s voltage.
  • Ensure the solar panel is facing due south and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes or tall grass.
  • Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel.
  • Batteries that are less than 40% charged may become damaged. Batteries MUST remain fully charged in freezing conditions.
  • When using a 12V deep cycle battery, there is no case to protect the battery, so the battery will be exposed to the elements and risk of theft.
  • This unit is not modular, therefore it is not repairable.

To Reduce Risk & Liability

  • Never place your head or upper spine near an electrified wire. Accidental head or neck contact can occur when pushing a voltage probe into the soil. Be careful when doing so to avoid head-to-wire contact!
  • Never attempt to step over or climb through an energized fence of any kind.
  • Never encourage anyone to touch an electric fence.

Warranty

3-year warranty for energizers and solar panels cover lightning damage and defective parts or workmanship. Should an energizer fail, we will replace the unit, bill you for the cost to do so, then reimburse you for warranted expenses after we have examined the failed unit. Misuse and flood damage are not covered.

Listed below are recommended optional components or related items. Your particular situation may require alternative recommendations. Please call and talk to our consultants if there are any questions at 800-282-6631.

Becke B from Tennesse

I have used the Patriot energizer for 9 years for my electric poultry netting, and finally had to replace it. Premier’s customer service was wonderful in making sure I got what I needed, and they were extremely helpful in helping me get replacement parts for my old and discontinued PRS 50 solar energizer. I love this unit and was pleasantly surprised that Premier 1 had the replacement parts for it. They could have tried to sell me a new unit, but instead they got me what I needed and sent it on its way. Could not be happier with the unit, and I’m even happier with customer service. Gordon was knowledgeable and extremely helpful—this high caliber of quality customer service is rare these days, and Premier 1 has earned a customer for life not just with their superior products but their customer service as well.

I have this product on one roll of Poultry Net. It works great running off of a battery. My birds have found it quite unpleasant to touch the fence, so they stay away from it. I would guess that predators would have the same reaction.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
