Common Uses

A solar powered electric fence energizer used to keep out deer, raccoons and rabbits from garden/orchard areas. It is also used to keep in poultry, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and guard dogs. Effective at protecting against coyotes, stray dogs, bear and fox.

Specs

Includes:

  • 1.0 joule energizer
  • 2-12 amp hour 12V sealed lead acid batteries
  • Wiring harness
  • 10-watt solar panel
  • Ground rod
  • Metal carry case

Note: Kit includes all of the above and a 5-Light Wireless Fence Tester.

  • 1.3 stored joules
  • 1.0 released joules
  • 0.87 joules in moist soils
  • 0.35 joules in dry soils

Miscellaneous

  • Requires 3' of ground rod in the ground.
  • Draw from a 12V battery is 87 milliampere (mA) per hour. With this energizer a 12v 100 ampere hour, deep cycle battery will last approximately 28 days* on a clean or a weedy fence. *Assumes being drawn down to 40% between recharges.
  • 40 pulses per minute.
  • If properly used and or stored, battery should last 3-4 years.

Should Power...

  • 2 miles of 3 strand cattle fence.
  • 3/4 mile of 5-7 strand sheep fence.
  • 10 164' Sheep/Goat nets or 4-5 164' Poultry Nets
All distances are dependent of grass/weed load on the fence.

Benefits

  • Assembled in house at Premier. We build each unit and test it before it goes out our door. This allows us to know that we are sending you a unit that works.
  • Lowest price for a powerful solar all-in-one 1.0 joule unit.
  • Can be laid flat on the ground during summer months to make them less visible to the public.
  • To catch the sun's power in winter, simply lean it against a post. If you live in low-sun areas, do this in the late fall and early winter also.
  • All metal case; very strong and rugged.
  • Won't rust. It's aluminum and stainless steel.
  • Light brown exterior reduces its visibility to vandals and reduces heat buildup inside the case.
  • All metal clamps for lid.

How to Use

Attach the energizer unit to the battery and it is ready to use. Drive in the ground rod. Lay it on the ground or against a post. Then attach the earth clip to the ground rod and the fence clip to the fence. Switch it on (when switching on, make sure the button is pressed all the way in).

Winter Use

If you're not using your PRS unit during the winter follow these tips to preserve battery life:

  • Turn off the unit. Disconnecting the unit from the fence is not sufficient, the unit will still pulse unless it is turned off.
  • Clean off the solar panel. Dust and debris may have accumulated during use and as a result prevents the panel from maximum electrical production.
  • Before the unit goes into storage, fully charge the unit. This will allow the battery to be topped off. Batteries that are 50% or less charged may become damaged in freezing temperatures.
  • If possible, place the unit in a sunny area, this will allow the solar panel to continuously top-off the battery. The battery will lose charge over time even if the unit is disconnected from the fence and turned off.
  • If you're planning on using your PRS unit during the winter months, follow these helpful hints:

  • Face the energizer due South, this will allow the panel to receive the maximum amount of light possible during the low-light days of winter.
  • Instead of laying the unit on its back, stand up or prop up the unit (facing South) to allow it to receive as much light as possible.
  • Hang the unit up (facing South), secure the top and base to prevent the unit from moving. This will keep the unit out of most snow drifts and allow accumulated snow to fall off.
  • If the unit is not to be hung up, clear all debris off the panel, this includes grass clippings, dust (especially on gravel roads), leaves and snow. Do not place in shady areas, this will reduce light intake.
  • To use light tester WITHOUT ground probe

    For Fence:
    1. Touch the top of the tester to the electrified fence you wish to test.
    2. Push the button (if applicable).
    3. The tester will light up according to the voltage at that location on the fence.
    For Energizer:
    1. Turn off energizer.
    2. Disconnect ground wire and fence wire from energizer.
    3. Turn on energizer.
    4. Touch the top of the tester onto the top of the fence terminal on the energizer.
    5. Push the button (if applicable).
    6. The tester should light up to 6000 volts or more.

To use light tester WITH ground probe

    For Fence:
    1. Insert the probe of the tester into the soil.
    2. Remove your hand from the metal portion of the probe (to avoid a shock).
    3. To get a voltage reading, touch the metal clip (on the top of the tester) to the electrified fence you wish to test.
    4. The tester will light up according to the voltage at that location on the fence.
    5. Remove the tester from the fence and the probe from the soil. Do not remove the probe by pulling the insulated wire.
    For Energizer:
    1. Turn off energizer.
    2. Disconnect ground wire and fence wire from energizer.
    3. Turn on energizer.
    4. Touch probe from tester to ground terminal on energizer (be sure to hold onto the insulated wire and not the metal probe!)
    5. At same time touch the fence hook on tester to fence terminal on energizer.
    6. The tester should light up to 6000 volts or more.

    Troubleshooting

You’ll need an electric fence tester (included with kit) to measure voltage.

Start by measuring the voltage at the end of the fence line. If the voltage is below 3000V, follow these steps to determine if the problem is with the fence, or the energizer.

    Test the energizer first!

    1. Turn off the energizer.
    2. Disconnect the wires going to the fence and ground stake/rod.
    3. Turn the energizer back on.
    4. Measure the voltage on the energizer between the two terminals (positive and negative) with a digital voltmeter or other high-voltage tester. Touch one end to “-“ (earth terminal) and the other end to “+” (fence terminal). The reading tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables.
    5. If the tester reads below 5000V, then the energizer (or possibly the battery) is the problem. If the voltage is above 5000V, then the trouble lies with your fence.

If the energizer is at fault:

Determine if the battery or the energizer is the problem.
    • Test the battery with a low-voltage tester; recharge if lower than 12.2 volts
    • Check the grounding system

If the fence is at fault:

Re-attach the fence and ground wires to the energizer and turn it on. Then, walk or drive along the fence looking for situations that are reducing the voltage:
    • Conductors touching another wire, steel post or the soil
    • Broken or damaged insulators

    Precautions

    • Make sure the power is turned off before working on the fence or the energizer.
    • Make sure the fence line is clear of grass and debris that may lower the fence’s voltage.
    • Ensure the solar panel is facing due south and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes or tall grass.
    • Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel.
    • Batteries that are less than 40% charged may become damaged. Batteries MUST remain fully charged in freezing conditions.

    To Reduce Risk & Liability

    • Never place your head or upper spine near an electrified wire. Accidental head or neck contact can occur when pushing a voltage probe into the soil. Be careful when doing so to avoid head-to-wire contact!
    • Never attempt to step over or climb through an energized fence of any kind.
    • Never encourage anyone to touch an electric fence.

    Warranty

3-year warranty solar panels cover lightning damage and defective parts or workmanship. Should an energizer fail, we will replace the unit, bill you for the cost to do so, then reimburse you for warranted expenses after we have examined the failed unit. Misuse and flood damage are not covered.

    30-day warranty for all batteries.

We use a PRS 100 to electrify the netting that subdivides one of our pastures. Both the sheep and guard dogs respect the charge it sends through the fence. If you experience low light in the winter months (like we do), the solar panel may not be able to charge the batteries as fast as they are depleted.

Works beautifully and took all of 35 minutes to read the instruction manual and set up. We are using the energizer in conjunction with the 164' poultry net and plan on adding more at a later date. It's currently running between 8,000 and 10,000 volts. We have a heavily wooded property and need to protect our birds from foxes, coyotes, possums and raccoons. Our 150 lb Cane Corsos attempted a sniff and let's just say they won't even look in the direction of the fence now. We can all rest easy at night knowing this energizer is protecting our birds, no question.

I purchased the PREMIER PRS 100 set (1) solar case includes 2 batteries and a charger, a small wireless hand held tester and 3' ground rod. It was delivered fast (2-3) days.

It looks great and comes fully assembled (just need to hook up the + wires to the batteries). I will write another comment once I hook it up to my fence. Thanks for reading and hope this was useful.

    About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

    Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

    Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

    Line Posts Compared
    1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
    2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
    3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

    * Not all fences have all line post options.

    About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

    Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

    How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

    * Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

    Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

    Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

    * Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

    Essential Energizer Advice

    • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
    • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
    • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
    • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
    • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
    • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
    • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
    • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

    Two Basic Types

    1. All-in-one Solar
      • Solar units are very portable.
      • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
      • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
      • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
    2. Plug-in & Battery
      • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
      • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
      • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
      • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

    Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

    What’s the benefit?

    1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
    2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
