How To Choose a Pigtail Fence Post

By Premier 1 Supplies

Grass farmers around the world rely on pigtail fencing posts for rotational grazing. Posts from Strainrite® Fencing Systems provide the best combination of durability and value on our own farms. Premier is pleased to offer them in the USA.

Pigtail Electric Fence Posts from Strainrite®
The utility of galvanized springsteel is important for many sheep and cattle operations. Strainrite’s pigtail posts stand up the harshest elements and are built to last.

Strainrite® electric fence posts are made in New Zealand, an island known for its high UV exposure and coastal sea spray. (Salty air acts as a corrosion agent.) Manufactured using top-grade galvanized steel and UV-treated plastics, these posts are built to withstand tough conditions.

Why Springsteel?

Common steel posts, when inserted into hard soils, are prone to bending along the shaft. By contrast, springsteel posts are more resilient. Stressed posts will flex and then “spring” back into their original shape.

It’s more than a benefit during installation; wayward round bales, ATVs, and other objects are less likely to permanently damage them.

Insulated Loop vs. Dura-Top Head

The pigtail ring on standard posts is encased in a durable UV-resistant plastic. But pigtails with Dura-Top heads are galvanized steel, eliminating wear-and-tear from friction and sunlight. They are also less likely to tangle when carrying a bundle—by hand, or if using a Pigtail Caddy.

Posts with a Dura-Top head feature an insulated top handle. This can be used to safely adjust posts when the fence is live. A real time-saver when you’re far from the power source.

Why Hotposts?

The key benefit of a “live-shaft” post is if a conductor is knocked out of the pigtail, or clip-on insulator, and makes contact with the metal post, the fence is not grounded out. It’s a good choice for graziers whose animals or environment are at high risk for dislodged conductors.

When used with conductive clips, a Hotpost can re-energize damaged filaments via parallel live wire(s).

Other post options:

Strainrite’s step-in posts are a good choice for graziers that prefer to keep a consistent conductor height throughout their fences. The insulators are “molded-on” and can secure a variety of electrified ropes, braids and twines.

Multiwire Springsteel Posts feature unique insulator clips which prevent the unintentional release of rope and twine. Alternatively, the top clip be used for narrow tape (up to 1.5″).

Choose Multiwire Step-in Plastic Posts for maximum versatility. Features (4) preformed clip positions for electrified tape and (8) clip positions for polywires.
