Electric Fence Wind-up Systems & Reels

Stringing conductors for subdividing pastures is easier when the twine, tape or rope is on a reel. No knots or tangles. Because the excess stays stored on the reel, there is no need to cut conductors to length. The $$ saved by investing in a quality wind-up system quickly pays for itself in the form of time, reduced aggravation, and extended conductor life.

How reels differ:

• Field capacity — The length of twine, tape or rope that a reel can hold (see chart below)
• Wind-up speed is largely determined by the internal diameter of the reel. Some reels use gearing to save time. The Speedrite™ Geared Reel and the Strainrite® 3:1 Geared Reel wind conductors very fast for speedy pasture rotations.
• How they’re supported — Some prefer a neck strap, which allows use of both hands vs. reels that are supported by one hand and wound up with the other
• Impact resistance — Reels with thick, strong ribs are generally the most durable

Premier’s reels vs. others

If you want the strongest and most durable reel available, Premier's SupaReel™ is the winner. It’s not cheap, but it’s well worth the cost. Because the SupaReel also has a braking system, we use it for 3-reel and 4-reel fence systems. Reels without brakes are suitable only for 1-strand or 2-strand systems.

Reel capacity vs. field capacity

There is a big difference between machine-wound capacity and field capacity (wound by hand). Field capacity can be half that of machine capacity. When others indicate a reel’s capacity ask which they mean.
