What’s in the kit?
Each kit includes all the components and hardware to build your own solar-powered electric fence energizer.
- Fence Energizer
- For maximum flexibility, we’ve included an energizer that can be plugged directly into a 110V AC outlet or connected to a 12V DC battery. PrimaShock® units are a budget-friendly combination AC/DC energizer.
- Solar Panel
- A useful rule of thumb is to size the solar panel based on the output joules of the fence energizer. For every joule of output, increase the power capacity of the panel by 10 watts. (e.g. Use a 40 watt panel for a 4 joule output energizer.)
- Voltage Regulator
- Overcharging a battery will reduce its lifespan, or cause permanent damage due to excess heat. A voltage regulator will regulate the voltage being sent to the battery by the solar panel.
- Rechargeable SLA Battery
- Each kit includes a 12 volt, 44 amp hr sealed lead acid (SLA) battery. SLA batteries are a type of deep-cycle battery that is low maintenance and spill-proof. A fully charged battery should have a resting voltage between 12.8V–12.6V.
- Mounting Hardware
- Galvanized steel support box allows for easy movement of your energizer, battery and solar panel as a complete unit. Solar panel brackets secure the panels at 45°.
- Grounding System
- Without proper grounding, the fence’s electrical circuit can not be completed. As a result, it will not be an effective pain barrier to animals. We recommend 3 ft of ground rod per joule of output from the energizer. Connect multiple ground rods together with insulated wire.

Installation
- Hang the battery energizer on the threaded bolt at the front of the support box. Ensure the bolt is tightened.
- The support box is pre-drilled for the solar panel brackets. Insert these into the top of the case and thread nuts onto bolts. Attach the solar panel to the brackets.
- The 12V battery sits in the center compartment. Attach the battery to the solar panel (for recharging). For maximum sunlight, orient the unit so the panel faces south.
- When the fence is ready to be energized: Connect the energizer to the fence, ground rod and finally the battery.
Troubleshooting
Start by measuring the voltage at the end of the fence line. If the voltage is below 3000V, follow these steps to determine if the problem is with the fence, or the energizer.
Test the energizer first!
- Turn off the energizer.
- Disconnect the wires going to the fence and ground stake/rod.
- Turn the energizer back on.
- Measure the voltage on the energizer between the two terminals (positive and negative) with a fence voltmeter or other high-voltage tester. Touch one end to “-“ (earth terminal) and the other end to “+” (fence terminal). The reading tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables.
- If the tester reads below 5000V, then the energizer (or possibly the battery) is the problem. If the voltage is above 5000V, then the trouble lies with your fence.
If the energizer is at fault:
- Test the battery with a low-voltage tester; recharge if lower than 12.2 volts
- Check the grounding system
If the fence is at fault:
- Conductors touching another wire, steel post or the soil
- Broken or damaged insulators
Storage
Tips to preserve battery life:
- Turn off the unit. Disconnecting the unit from the fence is not sufficient, the unit will still pulse unless it is turned off.
- Clean off the solar panel. Dust and debris may have accumulated during use and as a result prevents the panel from maximum electrical production.
- When the energizer is not being used, store the unit indoors at room temperature and out of the sun.
- When not in use, ensure the battery stays above 40% charged. Lead acid batteries don’t work well when they’re left discharged, or at a low charge, for long periods of time. Periodically recharge the battery in the sun or with a trickle charger. Stop charging when the battery tests between 12.6V and 13.4V. Do not overcharge the battery.

Cedar Ridge Farm from South Carolina
We are very impressed with this kit. Assembly was simple with very clear instructions provided. All materials needed are included, down to fasteners for ground rods and energizer. It delivers a strong shock and controls livestock well. Our LGD won’t even come close enough to its fence netting to have his ears scratched. Definitely happy with this purchase.

This charger is incredible! We had purchased much more expensive solar chargers, 12 joules. Bought this kit—it’s much stronger than the others, and is all inclusive. We literally had to buy nothing compared to having to buy a battery and ground rods in addition to paying over $500 more for the first ones we bought. It goes together in minutes and is ready to connect to the fence. Currently we are getting 8–9 KV on 2 strands, almost 3 miles of wire, covering approximately 25–30 acres. We are using it for a 3-D deer fence to protect our crops.
