What’s in the kit?

Each kit includes all the components and hardware to build your own solar-powered electric fence energizer.

Fence Energizer
For maximum flexibility, we’ve included an energizer that can be plugged directly into a 110V AC outlet or connected to a 12V DC battery. PrimaShock® units are a budget-friendly combination AC/DC energizer.
Solar Panel
A useful rule of thumb is to size the solar panel based on the output joules of the fence energizer. For every joule of output, increase the power capacity of the panel by 10 watts. (e.g. Use a 40 watt panel for a 4 joule output energizer.)
Voltage Regulator
Overcharging a battery will reduce its lifespan, or cause permanent damage due to excess heat. A voltage regulator will regulate the voltage being sent to the battery by the solar panel.
Rechargeable SLA Battery
Each kit includes a 12 volt, 44 amp hr sealed lead acid (SLA) battery. SLA batteries are a type of deep-cycle battery that is low maintenance and spill-proof. A fully charged battery should have a resting voltage between 12.8V–12.6V.
Mounting Hardware
Galvanized steel support box allows for easy movement of your energizer, battery and solar panel as a complete unit. Solar panel brackets secure the panels at 45°.
Grounding System
Without proper grounding, the fence’s electrical circuit can not be completed. As a result, it will not be an effective pain barrier to animals. We recommend 3 ft of ground rod per joule of output from the energizer. Connect multiple ground rods together with insulated wire.

Installation

  1. Hang the battery energizer on the threaded bolt at the front of the support box. Ensure the bolt is tightened.
  2. The support box is pre-drilled for the solar panel brackets. Insert these into the top of the case and thread nuts onto bolts. Attach the solar panel to the brackets.
  3. The 12V battery sits in the center compartment. Attach the battery to the solar panel (for recharging). For maximum sunlight, orient the unit so the panel faces south.
  4. When the fence is ready to be energized: Connect the energizer to the fence, ground rod and finally the battery.

Troubleshooting

You’ll need an electric fence tester (included with kit) to measure voltage.

Start by measuring the voltage at the end of the fence line. If the voltage is below 3000V, follow these steps to determine if the problem is with the fence, or the energizer.

Test the energizer first!

  1. Turn off the energizer.
  2. Disconnect the wires going to the fence and ground stake/rod.
  3. Turn the energizer back on.
  4. Measure the voltage on the energizer between the two terminals (positive and negative) with a fence voltmeter or other high-voltage tester. Touch one end to “-“ (earth terminal) and the other end to “+” (fence terminal). The reading tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables.
  5. If the tester reads below 5000V, then the energizer (or possibly the battery) is the problem. If the voltage is above 5000V, then the trouble lies with your fence.

If the energizer is at fault:

Determine if the battery or the energizer is the problem.
  • Test the battery with a low-voltage tester; recharge if lower than 12.2 volts
  • Check the grounding system
LEARN MORE

If the fence is at fault:

Re-attach the fence and ground wires to the energizer and turn it on. Then, walk or drive along the fence looking for situations that are reducing the voltage:
  • Conductors touching another wire, steel post or the soil
  • Broken or damaged insulators

Storage

Tips to preserve battery life:

  • Turn off the unit. Disconnecting the unit from the fence is not sufficient, the unit will still pulse unless it is turned off.
  • Clean off the solar panel. Dust and debris may have accumulated during use and as a result prevents the panel from maximum electrical production.
  • When the energizer is not being used, store the unit indoors at room temperature and out of the sun.
  • When not in use, ensure the battery stays above 40% charged. Lead acid batteries don’t work well when they’re left discharged, or at a low charge, for long periods of time. Periodically recharge the battery in the sun or with a trickle charger. Stop charging when the battery tests between 12.6V and 13.4V. Do not overcharge the battery.

Warranty

2-year warranty for energizers and solar panels cover lightning damage and defective parts or workmanship. Should an energizer fail, we will replace the unit, bill you for the cost to do so, then reimburse you for warranted expenses after we have examined the failed unit. Misuse and flood damage are not covered.

30-day warranty for all batteries.

Cedar Ridge Farm from South Carolina

We are very impressed with this kit. Assembly was simple with very clear instructions provided. All materials needed are included, down to fasteners for ground rods and energizer. It delivers a strong shock and controls livestock well. Our LGD won’t even come close enough to its fence netting to have his ears scratched. Definitely happy with this purchase.

Donna R from South Carolina

This charger is incredible! We had purchased much more expensive solar chargers, 12 joules. Bought this kit—it’s much stronger than the others, and is all inclusive. We literally had to buy nothing compared to having to buy a battery and ground rods in addition to paying over $500 more for the first ones we bought. It goes together in minutes and is ready to connect to the fence. Currently we are getting 8–9 KV on 2 strands, almost 3 miles of wire, covering approximately 25–30 acres. We are using it for a 3-D deer fence to protect our crops.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
