How to Use
Use the MiniTag applicator to install the tags:
- The male and female tags will come to you slightly connected. You will need to tear them apart.
- Place the flag of the female tag under the metal spring finger. The printed side of the female tag will be against the jaw of the applicator. Slide the male tag over the metal pin. Be sure to push it all the way onto the pin. The printed side of the male tag will be against the other jaw of the applicator.
- Make sure the tag is correctly placed. Slowly squeeze the handles together to be sure the male pin aligns with the female opening (be careful to not put the tag together yet).
- Place the ear between the jaws of the applicator. While gripping the ear, quickly and firmly squeeze the handles together until the male tag is inserted through the ear and into the female tag.
Tag placement is critical to success! Avoid the large veins in the ear. Why? Tissue around damaged veins heals slowly—so it’s prone to infection.
Precautions
Note: We will print both sides (male and female) unless otherwise specified. Scrapie approved tags are not available in blue. Flock ID number will be imprinted on female side only unless otherwise indicated.
Inserting Tags In Cold Weather
Plastic tags (all brands) are much easier to install if they are warm. Why? As the temperature drops below freezing plastic becomes less flexible (more stiff) and forcing the male point of a tag through the female takes many more lbs. of pressure (because the female must expand).
So if you care about your hands it’s a good idea to keep the tags above freezing in very cold weather. It takes very little to do this. One method is to simply store them while tagging in a small bucket, cardboard box or tool box with a lid alongside a sealed pop bottle full of warm water. The warm water will keep both the air and the tags warmer in the container.

Color is as shown. Nice and sharp. Worked great for our goats.

This is my first order with Premier 1. They were recommended by a dear friend. I had trouble with my previous company, but thanks to my friend for the recommendation, the switch is totally worthy! I’m absolutely satisfied with Premier 1 and their amazing customer service.

I've always used Allflex buttons, but availability has become a big issue. The Premier 1 MiniTags are similar in size and the laser etching is easily legible.

I love these little ear tags. We tag our lambs and goat kids destined for market soon after birth. My hubby and I have a blended ownership flock, so we know from the start who belongs to whom. Easy to read, and they stay in.

I wanted to love these little tags.
First the good part. Super fast order processing and delivery. Easy to customize and place order—I love this process—with lots of information on exactly what you are getting. Premier 1 is excellent for this. Arrived neatly packaged with two color versions of MiniTags plus some Q-flex 1.5 and QwikTags. Printing is gray, but readable and seems to stay readable. No issues with application or infections.
We just have bad retention with these. Yes I follow all guidelines obsessively about placement and handling. I use another brand for Scrapie and some of those tags are still in 10+ years later. I will say that when these tags come out, they just disappear into another dimension. They do not rip the sheep’s ear. Our flock is in barn confinement for winter and on 20+ acres of pasture 24/7 for summer so it is a mixed bag of environmental conditions for the eartags. I had purchased them to use as a second permanent tag for adult ewes and will continue to re-tag until they are gone. But they are not going to last for that purpose like I had hoped. I think they would make an excellent temporary baby lamb tag because they are small and light and readable and don’t seem to rip out (the QwikTags do occasionally rip, but seldom). I would never get them in Scrapie. I got a small batch of the Q-Flex 1.5 for second tags and they seem to have better retention on our farm, but I have placed fewer than ten so far.
