Hatching Tips

New to hatching eggs? Visit this link to Get Started with Egg Incubators.

Always choose eggs suitable for incubation. If possible, choose eggs that have not traveled by mail. Why? Because eggs that are closed inside packaging do not breathe and may have experienced excessive travel stress, vibration, and temperature changes.

Do not incubate eggs dirty with fecal material, as during incubation the temperature and humidity will lead to the establishment of bacterial flora. This can contaminate all the eggs, causing infections to the embryos and resulting in premature death during hatching.

Choose eggs of normal shape. They must not be elongated, spherical, undulated or with any other malformation.

Precautions

For successful hatching, it is recommended to keep the incubator in residential premises, not in sheds, porches or garages. The room temperature should ideally be between 68°F and 77°F and draft free. The room must be well ventilated and comfortable. Ensure the incubator is not exposed to direct sunlight or placed close to heat sources such as radiators, stoves, fireplaces, boilers, etc.

The room’s relative humidity should be between 20%–80% when using the SIRIO Humidity Pump, or between 50%–75% without.

Borotto® incubators are designed for the simple incubation of most poultry eggs. Very large eggs will NOT fit in the turner. Temperature and humidity calibration is performed at the factory and is not user-adjustable. Please read the specifications of the incubator to make sure it will work for your situation.

Warranty

Borotto Egg Incubators are covered by a limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, including the motor and electronic components, for a period of 2 years from the date of purchase.

When we tested the Borotto® incubators at Premier we were impressed. These quality units are manufactured by a well-regarded Italian firm known for its high performance incubation machines. They will be good fit for small-scale poultry producers or school and farm club projects. We achieved a high hatch rate with chicken eggs and quail eggs. Of the viable eggs, we were in the 90-100% range for hatching. We liked it's strongly-built humidity pump, and easy to adjust temperature settings. Plus, its price compares favorably with the competition.

I already had a Real 24 and one of the styrofoam incubators, but wanted another incubator to replace the styrofoam one. I looked at several incubators online, and while some had good reviews, I decided to buy a Real 49 with humidity pump. This was based upon my experience using the Real 24 with good results for the past couple years. The Real 49 is quite easy to operate, however, in the box were two instruction manuals for the incubator but no instructions regarding the humidity pump. I was able to find the manual online and the incubator is working well.

I started with 49 goose eggs that my geese had laid and I found, so many were unknown age and condition. I actually thinned out 8 that popped when they busted. Only one of these hatched, but geese are hard to hatch.

I then raised quail. All hatched, three pipped but could get out of the shell, and I accidentally killed three with drowning in the water bowl. Those were my fault but I had exceptional hatch rates for quail, so the geese were my fault.

Easy to use, clean, and set up. I highly recommend.

I had high hopes for this product because it was backed by Premier 1 and they have good products. However that was not the case with this incubator. My hatch rates have dropped dramatically. There are hot and cold spots throughout. I move the eggs like they say and still have crap results. 102° in some areas then 99° in others. I have only used it 3 times and I thought maybe I would get better hydrometer and try again this spring. Same issues. It’s in a location with a pretty consistent temp. DO NOT risk the money. Spend the extra on a Brinsea. Now our breeding and 4-H projects are suffering because of this and I’m relying on a few broody hens to get my eggs hatched. That’s a slow process until I can buy a different incubator. This is NOT up to Premier’s standards.

This is by far the best quality incubator I have owned. It is well made and functions even better. Having the humidity pump makes all the difference. The temp. and humidity stay constant and in perfect range. I am 6 days into the first batch of 49 chicken eggs and I’ll update the review after hatching to inform on hatching percentage.

I purchased this incubator over the phone with no problems. It arrived well packaged and I put it together and started it up before putting in eggs. After two days, the humidity still wasn’t right. A small plastic inlet had a crack and was not allowing the pump to pull water. Another phone call and the part was on the way. Arrived in a couple of days, changed it out and has worked perfectly. After three weeks, we have chicks. Highly recommend Premier 1!

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
