Common Uses

Use the PRS Pro 100 Solar Energizer with all fence conductors and electric netting to contain sheep, goats, poultry, swine, cattle and horses. Effective against predators such as coyotes, stray dogs, bears and foxes.

Can also be used with garden and wildlife barriers to keep out deer, raccoons, woodchucks, rabbits, opossums, skunks and more.

Benefits

Premier’s 1J output PRS Pro 100 Solar Energizer will reduce energy demand when the fence’s voltage is high—due to fewer weeds touching the fence. This occurs in fall and winter for most fences, and occurs all year for some horse, cattle and deer fences. As a result, the unit’s batteries are more likely to remain charged through the low sunlight days of autumn and winter.

Recessed solar panel
Recessed solar panel
For protection from bumps and scrapes, the glass solar panel is recessed into the housing. Drainage channels reduce ice build-up.
External clip grips
External clip grips
Preformed “parking spaces” for the fence and ground leads prevent accidental damage from dangling alligator clips.
Room for tools!
Room for tools!
Store a fence tester and other essentials (e.g. repair kits, Litzclips, Gripples) inside the UV-treated case.

Additional features:

15W glass solar panel—Glass increases longevity (vs. plastic), and the smooth surface discourages the growth of moss and other bacteria. Monocrystalline cells convert more of the sun’s energy into usable electrons.

Ground rod support—The top of a T-shaped ground rod fits into a slot on the back of the energizer's case. Prop the unit at different angles to optimize the panel’s solar collection ability.

Sealed electrical components—Ants and other insects are attracted to electrical circuitry. The PRS Pro’s primary circuit board (PCB) and transformer are “sealed”, meaning bugs cannot get inside.

Status indicator lights—Waterproof on/off switch flashes to indicate the operational status of the unit. Green when the battery has adequate voltage, red/green when the battery needs charging, and red when the battery is very low and needs immediate charging.

110V recharging port—Allows the energizer to be operated without a battery, or to recharge the battery via standard wall outlet when using the included recharger.

New For 2025! Tan exterior—Reduces its visibility to vandals. Tip: Lay units flat on the ground during summer months to make them less visible to the public.

How to Use

BEFORE INITIAL OPERATION: Open the energizer lid and connect the wires to the battery as indicated in the Operation Manual (PDF download above). Refer to the manual for additional information.

* Note: Some areas may require additional grounding—especially those without adequate moisture. Extra ground rods can be purchased separately and connected together using insulated wire or with a GroundLink. (Space ground rods at least 3' apart.) For very dry conditions, a 6 ft ground rod may be needed to reach moist soil.

Always check the voltage to ensure the fence is properly electrified before introducing animals.

Optimal Solar Orientation and Placement

Correct placement of the energizer and solar panel is critical to the best operation of the unit.

1. Position the energizer so that the solar panel faces due south. This will allow the panel to receive the maximum amount of sunlight possible even during the low-light days of winter. Consider the sun’s movement throughout the day and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes, tall grass, buildings or fence posts.

2. Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel. This includes grass clippings, dust (especially on gravel roads), leaves and snow as this will reduce the solar panel’s ability to recharge the battery.

Precautions

  • Make sure the power is turned off before working on the fence or the energizer.
  • Make sure the fence line is clear of grass and debris that may lower the fence’s voltage.
  • Ensure the solar panel is facing due south and avoid placing the unit where it may be covered by shadows from trees, bushes or tall grass.
  • Regularly remove all debris from the solar panel.
  • Batteries that are less than 40% charged may become damaged. Batteries MUST remain fully charged in freezing conditions.

To Reduce Risk & Liability

  • Never place your head or upper spine near an electrified wire. Accidental head or neck contact can occur when pushing a voltage probe into the soil. Be careful when doing so to avoid head-to-wire contact!
  • Never attempt to step over or climb through an energized fence of any kind.
  • Never encourage anyone to touch an electric fence.

Troubleshooting

You’ll need an electric fence tester (optional, see Accessories) to measure voltage.

Start by measuring the voltage at the end of the fence line. If the voltage is below 3000V, follow these steps to determine if the problem is with the fence, or the energizer.

Test the energizer first!

  1. Turn off the energizer.
  2. Disconnect the wires going to the fence and ground stake/rod.
  3. Turn the energizer back on.
  4. Measure the voltage on the energizer between the two terminals (positive and negative) with a digital voltmeter or other high-voltage tester. Touch one end to “-“ (earth terminal) and the other end to “+” (fence terminal). The reading tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables.
  5. If the tester reads below 5000V, then the energizer (or possibly the battery) is the problem. If the voltage is above 5000V, then the trouble lies with your fence.

If the energizer is at fault:

Determine if the battery or the energizer is the problem.
  • Test the battery with a low-voltage tester; recharge if lower than 12.2 volts
  • Check the grounding system
LEARN MORE

If the fence is at fault:

Re-attach the fence and ground wires to the energizer and turn it on. Then, walk or drive along the fence looking for situations that are reducing the voltage:
  • Conductors touching another wire, steel post or the soil
  • Broken or damaged insulators
LEARN MORE

Storage

Tips to preserve battery life:

  • Turn off the unit. Disconnecting the unit from the fence is not sufficient, the unit will still pulse unless it is turned off.
  • Clean off the solar panel. Dust and debris may have accumulated during use and as a result prevents the panel from maximum electrical production.
  • When the energizer is not being used, store the unit indoors at room temperature and out of the sun. Do not let the energizer sit in the sun for an extended period when it is turned OFF as this could damage the battery.
  • When not in use, ensure the battery stays above 40% charged. Lead acid batteries don’t work well when they’re left discharged, or at a low charge, for long periods of time. Periodically recharge the battery in the sun or with the included 110V charging unit. Stop charging the battery at or above 12.6V when checked with a fence/battery tester. Do not overcharge the battery.

Warranty

3-year warranty for energizers and solar panels cover lightning damage and defective parts or workmanship. Should an energizer fail, we will replace the unit, bill you for the cost to do so, then reimburse you for warranted expenses after we have examined the failed unit. Misuse and flood damage are NOT covered.

30-day warranty for all batteries.

Folks loved our original PRS units—they were very strong and rugged. Due to their unconventional design, PRS energizers were easy to haul around on ATVs and could withstand inclement conditions. Units could be laid flat on the ground during summer months, which made them less visible to the public.

In 2019, we set out to improve the PRS, but Covid slowed our R&D efforts (as it did for many other things.) We’re finally satisfied with the changes:
  • Increased the size of the solar panel by 50%. Monocrystalline cells convert more of the sun’s energy into usable electrons.
  • Upgraded its weather resistance. Drainage holes and channels ensure water runs off of the case, reducing potential ice build-up underneath the solar panel and around the on/off button.
  • Molded a recessed cavity on bottom of unit to fit T-shaped ground rods. Prop the unit at different angles to optimize the panel’s solar collection ability.
  • Added clip grips on the housing to cut down on dangling alligator clips—a hazard during transport.
  • Room for tools! Store a fence tester and a few other essentials inside the housing.
The PRS Pro is designed to meet the needs of rotational graziers and those looking for a robust all-in-one solar energizer.

This box is much lighter than the original big brown boxes and has handles for easier movement. It also includes storage compartments for alligator clips, a charging cord, a fence tester, and a bit more space for other items. If you have a T ground rod, the box has a spot that rests nicely on it, holding the box at an angle. It works really well—I’ll definitely be buying another one.

This kit has everything you need. Directions are simple to follow. I never thought I would need a fence tester but after getting one I’m glad I did. More reliable than a blade of grass. Worth the money and allows from more options in setting up netting.

So far this energizer is working great. We use it on two sections of 42" tall x 164' fencing for our goats to clear out some land. I would have given 5 stars, but one of the wires for the positive hookup was cut when I received it. Looks like the metal clipping was just too tight and cut it… an easy fix. I like that it came with everything needed and appears to be very sturdy.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
